: Idle surge
jpndave 09-22-2004, 05:11 PM I have an early '01 Duramax that is surging at idle. It is particularly noticeable at idle in gear. If I'm not on the brakes firmly the truck will surge forward. No additives are used and the fuel filter is new. The injectors were just checked and they are "within parameters". Anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to the cause?
Thanks,
Dave
chuntag95 09-22-2004, 05:28 PM Fuel Pressure regulator is one potential cause.
Black Dog 09-22-2004, 06:19 PM Yes, fuel pressure regulator. If you are under 100K, get it replaced under warranty. Mine did it, and it has idled perfectly since the fuel pressure regulator (actually, at the time they were replacing the entire fuel pump) was replaced.

Did you get it fixed and what was the result? Appreciate a reply, mine is also an '01 and has been surging for about 2 weeks now. Getting annoying now and maybe a little worse than when it started. This may be the first real engine problem I have had with the truck. 44K so mileage is low. I have a Nicktane, do I have to take that sucker off before I go in? I don't think so, but thought I would ask since the surge is fuel related.
3.5 years old and 44K. "Just a summer weekend warrior", but it's been and still is a great truck.
Chevysrus 12-17-2004, 12:55 AM Anyone else have the idle surge and get it fixed...what is it most likley to be and what happens if you just ignore it, what does it hurt and will it eventually leave me stranded?
I hate the thought of someone "opening" up my engine for surgery and not having malpractice insurance LOL
MICKD 12-18-2004, 10:28 AM My 03 had a problem with the fuel pressure regulator. It was surging as discribed aboved. It had to be ordered, the tech told me "it won't hurt anything if you drive it until the new one comes in you won't be stranded anywhere don't worry about that" Replaced and running good :)
Chevysrus 12-19-2004, 01:47 AM Thanks MICKD, appreciate it, guess I will take it in after the holidays and see if they can screw the truck up somehow. Last time I took it in to get 1 battery replaced it come home with a hole in the windshield washer bottle (it was in front of the battery). Not sure if the leaking battery acid ate a hole in it or if the gorilla that installed the battery punched a hole in the washer bottle. They replaced it, but had to take it back in to get it done.
It didn't leak a drop before the battery replacement, but dripped in my driveway when I got home. Well as they sat #@$% happens! Hope this next one goes smooth.
Best Regards & Thanks
diesel66 12-20-2004, 04:31 PM My '01 has recently started surging at idle. Noticed that it is much worse at cold start-up, seems to smooth out after running about 15 minutes. I'm assuming it's a Fuel Pressure regulater, or FRPCV? Is this a correct assumption?, and it should be replaced under the 100,000 engine warranty, correct?
Chevysrus 12-21-2004, 12:56 AM I'am taking mine in after the holidays and will let you all know what they say and do to fix it.
Happy Holidays!
The Flash 12-23-2004, 09:41 PM mine did the same its a 01 i had them flash the ECU and it did not help then i had them replace the fuel presure reg and it fixed it. almost now it only does it in the winter and not all the time.
thanks
socaldieseltech 12-24-2004, 12:45 AM Chevysrus, sounds like a frpr problem. I'm not far from you if you want me to fix it for you. Let me know.
Chevysrus 12-29-2004, 02:07 AM Thanks SOCALDIESELTECH, I would definitely do that, but I am in the "other" Brentwood near Stockton and Livermore N. CAL. I have an appointment for next week at the dealer where I bought it. They have a good diesel guy there I think can "get er done". I just hate the thought of opening up the engine to fix it. OH well %^$# happens huh!
I'll let you know how it goes when the operation is over.
