: How much weight can I haul in the truck bed?
sossw 04-17-2007, 03:27 PM I have a 2003 ext cab 3500 dually 4x4. How much weight can I haul in the bed. I need to haul 4 spools of 1/4" cable about 60 miles. The spools are about 24 inch diameter by 18 inches wide. The distributer says the combined spools are about 3100 lbs. We have a 22' long 14000# trailer but that seems quite excessive for the load.
Any comments and input would be appreciated.

got-h2o 04-17-2007, 04:54 PM I just had 5,600lbs in the bed of a half ton gasser yesterday. It didn't bat an eye. Trust me, it can handle it.
dozerboy 04-17-2007, 05:55 PM As long as you don't have to get on a scale.
CBRJohn2000 04-17-2007, 06:16 PM Myu Moto is "LOAD IT TILL IT SCREAMS" or breaks.....whichever comes first, but then you would know how much it can handle
twinky586 04-17-2007, 07:32 PM hey goth2o, if u ever put that much weight in your truck again can u post a pic for us please

My dad was hauling stone yesterday (in my work truck). He had over 2 yards of 1 1/2" river rock @ 2800lbs a yard. It was his last trip and he didn't want to go back. It handled it rather well. I thought of taking a picture after it was half unloaded. The 285's were the suspension for that ride home! I think he's done, but if he needs more, I'll take one. BTW @ $32 a yard for multicolor, I might get some for myself!

Yeah that's a good point especially if you have any work related decals on your truck.
I don't think you'll have a problem; just give yourself ample stopping distance and be careful.
sossw 04-18-2007, 09:32 AM Thanks for the input people. I was reading in the owner's manual after I made this post and it mentioned a sticker inside the glove box showing the Cargo Weight Rating (CWR). The owners manual says this is to help you pick the right slide-in camper...anyways...the Cargo Weight Rating of my truck says 3535 lbs. so I should be OK legally as long as I don't exceed the rear GAWR.

McRat 04-18-2007, 09:35 AM We had a 3000lb+ camper in Blue and drove to Kentucky and back with it.
3000lb ain't nothing.
sossw 04-18-2007, 10:07 AM I have hauled bags of concrete in the bed before. There was around 2200 lbs and I was pulling the 22' trailer with building materials. Using the tow/haul mode made pretty easy work of things.
McRat. Now that I'm thinking back the 3100 lbs shouldn't cause me any concerns. Thanks
sossw 04-19-2007, 09:55 AM Well guys,
I hauled the load in the truck without any problems whatsoever. There didn't seem to be much of a strain on the drivetrain or suspension and the motor and tranny didn't strain at all.

chevy6.0fan 04-19-2007, 06:22 PM I have hauled with the bed full to the rails with pea gravel in my 2500. My truck would sit level with this load but I have additional suspension. If my subtraction skills are correct I believe the load was 3950. I have a 2500 LD too!!

I hate to admit it, but I regularly put 5000 lbs in the back.
The AAM1150 axle in these trucks is rated at 4950 KG, about 10,000
lbs. 6000 in the bed should be no problem if you have proper tires,
rims and springs.
thejdman04 04-19-2007, 09:25 PM Def no problems w/the rolls. YOu put that much in a 1/2 ton???? Id be sccared of a tire blow out, def need pictures.
GMCWAYNE 04-20-2007, 10:46 AM I had 6000# in mine yesterday. Only had to go a couple miles with it. I was just a little nervous. There was still 1/4 inch of clearance between the axle and the bump stops. I was mostly worried about the rims and tires. I'll try and post a pic later.
