With the PIAA Silicone wipers, very rarely have to use the wipers themselves. the Silicone from the wipers impregnates itself on the windshield and the rain just beads off.

My truck is due for wipers, and the wife's has a noisy chatter.

I just posted in the wiper thread, too. I've had the PIAA silicones on my truck for 2 years and over 60,000 miles and just ordered a replacement set. I've used the RainX treatment on the windows in the past, but have just been buying the RainX washer and Bug solvent washer for the last couple of years. That combined with the PIAA wipers has kept the windshield pretty well coated and self-cleaning.

Great stuff! Also makes it very easy to get the bug guts off your windshield - even after being baked on in the 80+ degree fall temps we're having here now(hasn't been this warm all summer).

Im a believer. I used it out of necessity when I was younger. Had a pos buick, wiper motor was dead and I couldn't afford a new motor. I used RainX once a week and never had a problem driving in the rain. I still use it, it makes cleaning the windows a lot easier, and seeing in the rain much clearer.

I have used it in the past, and use it today. I like it alot. I went through a rain storm as well as sleet and barely used the wipers when others were on full speed. Minimal usage while passing the semi-trucks as well.

I use to use RainX, and it worked fine as advertised.

What I dont like about it an why I quit using it is that the RainX gets into every little sand pit in your windshield and highlights it.

I ran out of RainX and just forgot to get some on my last truck with 150,000 miles of rocks, sand, etch on the windshield.

After almost a year, I bought some more and put it on. OMG your could see every little pit in the windshield, it drove me nuts and looked like crap.

So I took some 000000 Steel Wool to it and got it off. Went back to actually using wipers for the rain.

JMHO, but if it would not show the pits in the glass, I would use it again.

I have thought many times about trying it as well, but something always kept me from doing it. It isn't how cheap it is, I've always wondered about how much of a pain it is to keep reapplying, what does it do when it starts to wear off, etc. . . Hell, I've wasted a lot more money than that on a lot less beneficial things. . . . http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Tom,

Isn't that kind of dichotomous? If you use Rain-X, then you don't use your wipers, but if you use your wipers, then you get Rain-X. . . Kooky.

OK - For all those that are skeptical. Here is a free sample. To use it:

1) Print the free sample (below) using your computers attached printer.

2) Rub the printed copy (face down) briskly across your windhield.

3) Test utilizing natural weather source (rain) or alternative similar means (garden-hose).

*Your free Rain X subscription will expire 72 hours after application.

BTW - Before anyone actually tries this and damages their windshield, I'm only kidding (thank the lawyers)!

Try the Zaino glass polish to get rid of those rocks, sand and etching. I do about every 3-4 months and it helps quite a bit. You can also go out to the Eastwood company and order their glass polishing kit that is a bit more heavy duty. It makes a mess, but really cleans up the glass. RainX after that and you are pretty good to go.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif The steel wool probably did some polishing and you might see the difference after using it.Edited by: chuntag95

Dennis,

What does that mean? I guess I should clarify. Rain X is obviously not a replacement for wipers. I guess I should have said that I don't need to use wipers until the rain gets real heavy. Sorry for the confusion.

New to the forum...just wanted to add, I use rain X on all my vehicles even if none are a truck (waiting to order one next May and doing my homework in the meantime). I feel it works great. I'm not trying to sell the product but would like to say make sure you "buff" the glass until it feels real smooth when you pass over the glass with the paper towel or what ever you are using. If you feel resistance while wiping, you may have a slight haze still on the windshield which can be very annoying at night when lights hit it. Just wanted to let you know from experience. Love this forum...very informative....keep up all the good work.

When treating with Rain-X, I always washed my window thoroughly with soap and water and a lot of elbow grease - followed that with a serious scubbing with some white vinegar - then a flush with clean water before applying the Rain-X. That removes and breaks down pretty much any residues, films or coatings you have on your glass.

Bad experience with the Rain-X antifog. My windshield was continuously fogged and took over six months of wiping to get it all removed. Anyone else us that stuff? Is there a good antifog treatment?

What about glare from the sun? Its been a long time since I've used rain-x, but I thought I quit because it seemed to pick up dust easier and also when the sun is just right the glare seemed worse than normal...could have just been me though.

Where we live, we get alot of haze build up (for lack of better words)
inside the windshield. When looking into the sun, you can see the
almost "mist" effect. From the local industries in the area
(pollution)

Motcopter; try spit. Works well in a dive mask. Get
drunk, and ya should have lots to do the windshield! Dive shops
usually carry a little bottle of an anti fog stuff. For those who
don't like rubbing spit around, I guess.

I've used rain -x and was impressed with it's effects.

But let me drop this on ya. A buddy and I were in his truck the other day during a down pour and I told him aren't you use rain -x,, he just laughed!

Plain ol turtle wax on the windshield, he said it's about 1/10th the cost and lasts just about as well.

I've used Rain-X since I had my first P/U. It was a 1973 C20 HD. The wipers didn't do much good due to the angle of the windshield. I put Rain-X on and never had a problem again seeing. Yes, it does cause a haze when first put on if not done properly, but that's small in comparison to not being able to see in the rain.

For the record, I'm pretty anal about seeing when I drive and with Rain-X, I have not had a need to run the wipers on any of my vehicles any higher than intermittent.

If you don't see much rain, don't bother.

Work pretty good for snow too. But that is a gut feel, no good evidence.

I like Rain-X but after using the wippers for a long time I find they start leaving black marks on the windshield. This then makes the wippers skip on the window....that REALLY drives me nuts. Don't come back and say you do not need the wippers with rain-xhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif.....drive a couple of hundred miles in the rain you need them. Going down the road....sure we don't need them as much.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that rain-x fights frost. It keeps the windows from freezing. But a deep frost it is tough fight against it.

Griots sells a great window polish also.

I have not read the thread, I just wanted to say that Rain-X sucks.

I have used the stuff off and on for years... destroyed every piece of glass it touced. Well, not destroyed but uk'ed it up. It takes a lot of work to get the slime out of the glass.

Try Aquapel (sp). That's the best stuff I have ever used! It does not shead water as readdly as rain-http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif but lasts a very long time. It also does not streak the glass. It doesn't have that hazey refection like rain-x, from street lights and such. Unlike the rain stuff, it does not show the wiper marks "after" cleaning the car. The glass looks brand new after every wash! The stuff is made by PPG and there is someone here who sells it. I cannot emphisize how much better it is than that wax crap.

Ahhh, Rain-X. Haven't had to use it in SoCal, so I kinda forgot about it. (And folks wonder why everything catches on fire 'round here). Used Rain-x religously in Iceland years ago and NOTHING else even came close. Kept the windshield spotless in 20below in white out conditions! Good stuff, cheap, easy to apply. Works good on streetbike helmets and headlights too.
