I read about diesels being referred to as "oil burners". What does that actually mean - does it actually use the oil that I change or is it the oil content in the fuel?

what he said....diesel fuel is almost identical to home heating oil...it is also less refined than gasoline making it closer to crude oil than gas

I wonder why the price is higher than gass if it takes less refinement?:damnit1:

the price difference is just because of the popularity growth of diesel the company's are making all they can while they can. when diesel becomes the norm and gasoline becomes the odd man out then gas will be more expensive.

Because people are willing to pay it... economically, you charge as much as people will pay.

me too.

they are called oil burners because the fuel ( well, maybe LSD ) has an oily consistancy to it, compared to gasolines harsh dry solvent feel.

my gasser starts eating oil after about 5k on a change, guess that means I should change it before it breaks down far enough to do that

yea.

i have never even heard of people using oil consumption as a change-indicator.

i use more oil when i remove and wipe my dipstick than the engine uses between changes.
