: 285s and 315s .... how much loss of ummph??
TxChristopher 09-21-2004, 02:13 PM Those of you that have 285's or 315's on your trucks, how big a penalty did you pay in acceleration, both empty and towing? Anyone have gtech or timeslip data?
Disregard the looks, we all know they look better with the bigger tires, but I love the way the truck runs and wouldn't wanna just totally wreck the power just for looks. Some loss yes wouldn't kill the fun, just looking for input on what to expect. Thanks!
WitsEnd 09-21-2004, 04:21 PM I have 285/76/16 BFG A/T's on mine, and put them on at approximately 500 miles as I couldn't stand to look at my new truck with those wimpy 245s on it. I didn't notice any degradation in performance, however, during the first 500 miles I was not driving aggressively. I can tell you that the performance with the 285s is still very impressive and it impresses my gasser driving friends every time they ride with me!Edited by: WitsEnd
blowinsmoke 09-21-2004, 04:22 PM I have 35's and with the edge/*** on level 4 it shows a 7.6 on 0-60http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif
Although that is the juice waiting for stop no spool up or anything. my buddy has a dodge reg cab short bed hemi. I smoked him literally of the line. He was p1ssed off for days. He says he's gonna put a k&n air filter and try me againhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif I launched in 2wd with a little spinning on level 3. I love this truck. If the tires slow me down, I'll just more goodies to compensate. So dont worry about rubber envyhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
04DMCC4X4 10-11-2004, 01:03 AM With the 285's did you put different rims on as well, if so do they rub, what kind and what are the offset/backset diminsions? I can not stand the way my truck looks either, it needs some beefy wheels and tires!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

I put the 285 BFG AT's on the stock rims - didn't have the cash to buy new wheels at the time (but I would like to get a set! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif). I don't have any problem with rubbing, however, I did crank up the torsion bars and got about 1" of additional clearance in the front wheel wells. The 285/75/16's will cause your speedo to be slow by approximately 7% compared to the stock tires.
Just putting the 285s on the truck made it look much better than the stock 245s.

Since I started this thread I put 285/75 15 bfg's on the stock wheel. I couldn't stand the way it looked with the stock tires either. The drivers side front rubbed on the plastic fender liner only when backing, and 2 turns on the bars and some good hard palm strikes has eliminated that forever it seems.
I did notice a drop in performance. I got a gtech rr now but will have to find stock wheels and tires now to test the diff. The stockers couldn't begin to harness the power even from a roll and the difference in effective gearing played into that some I am sure.
Gained top end with the 285's whoop!
Best 0-60 on the 285's so far is 6.2 secs, I think it can do better with more testing/playing.

gardnerteam 10-11-2004, 07:17 PM I've run 285, and the taller 295. 285 doesn't seem to affect power, but 295 does affect power a bid, especially on takeoff. Allison learns to compensate. Both sizes KILL fuel mileage as much as 3 mpg. 285 on 8" Welds easily fit on 05 with green keys - lots of clearance.
gelecon 10-11-2004, 07:21 PM Does anyone carry a plow with 285's.......is clearance an issue without cranking the front end up the full 1.5 inches?
Canoli 10-11-2004, 10:23 PM WHat are the green keys?
TxChristopher 10-12-2004, 12:01 AM .
Green keys are factory index keys for the half ton trucks, called that for the splash of green color. The keys are what determine the available beginning and ending points of rotation for your torsion bars. The green keys start out with the bars turned more downward against the arms than stock, so that you have more "lift" available by turning the torsion bar bolt than if you had the stock keys in because you started with the bars already turned some compared to stock before you even begin to crank on the bolt.

About how much ground clearance do you think you gained with tires and torsion bars twisted up?
When you say a drop in performance, you mean off the line so it hooks up better? Did you notice a performance difference while towing?
Canoli 10-12-2004, 08:48 PM WHere do you get the green keys and how hard are they to install? DO you think i could get 2 full inches with the green keys and a a few cranks on the torsion bars? I have a 2500 HD crew cab 4x4 duramax.

You can get 2" with the stock keys. But if you do it, your ride will turn to crap and you will force your shocks to top out failure. Green Keys really accomplish nothing for you and do not address the downside issues. The stock keys are generally enough, and you would be well advised to fully research this before you do it, especially if you expect to do much 4wd. It is very easy to do (and undo), but there is more involved in keeping integral ride quality, and mechanical problems at bay.
I have extensive experience testing the various configurations, and realizing the consequences. My advice: research first
04DMCC4X4 10-17-2004, 03:05 AM What do you mean it will ride like crap?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
killerbee 10-17-2004, 09:26 AM If you raise the front 2", you have just emiminated ALL the downtravel built into the IFS. At that point the wheels are hanging from the shock stop. With no downtravel, you will bounce all over the place. Try it, mark the schock piston rod at the rest location and jack up the front end, at about 2.5", the shock will extend no more.
This has been hashed over and over. Do some search's, there are remedies.
04DMCC4X4 10-18-2004, 11:15 PM Is there a front end leveling kit available? what are the remedies?http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
