Is there a aftermarket exhaust that will fit a 6.5 turbo swap (on a 6.2) in an earlier style body 87 and earlier. Will a 6.5 head pipe actually fit and does the crossover pipe fit. Or do I have to trailer this to a muffler shop. (NOT Midas rippoff king or Mineke )

The truck and van/hummer exhaust manifolds may require modification for use in your early model, but nothing major. If you can put the 6.5 in range rover it should fit the '80's chevy bodystyle.

I don't want to spend the money on a headpipe if its not going to fit, if I can't get a headpipe on it I need to tow it to shop. Trying to sort out most issues BEFORE I take truck apart to start it. Just so its availible to me with as little downtime as possible.

I don't have the luxury of haing parts availible to trial fit or measure against. I am assuming there is no way a newer exhaust system is going to work Even with minor mods. That would be too easy.

Take a look at the 6.5L TD truck set up.

The only thing different from the 6.2L exhaust is the turbo/downpipe and crossover part. If you loosen the bolts the center section of the turbo will rotate in the exhaust housing allowing more versatility of positions.

I need to see how close the clearance issues are with the heater box. I assume I will have to tow this to the muffler chop then if the crossover pipe from 6.5 won't fit, and the downpipe wont work either. Need something to at least get it under the floorpan to be able to drive it to shop. Something elses I noticed. My wastegate Actuator moves in and out with no resistance, I guess that means its bad, there should be a spring that load it in one direction am I correct?

Does it have a vacuum port? If yes, then it is a $300 dealer part and could find a home easily on the 6.5L forum. The solution is to make your own adjustable spring arm or buy Heath's turbo master $60 USD. The crossover should bolt right up unless a front drive shaft is in the way.Edited by: quantum mechanic

its on a GM-4 the waste gate actuator looks like any pictures I have seen. Single nipple on it. But I will look again when I get home to make sure there was not 2 fitings.

An off the shelf crossover pipe will be cheaper than paying a shop to make one around here. I didn't know if it would fit the 6.5 manifolds mounted on 6.2 heads. I am in the DC metro area and don't know of any shops who can do mandrel bent systems. Everyone does crush bend.

Sounds like the vacuum WG actuator.

The stock exhaust pipe isn't worth acquiring.

Summit has a flow master mandrel kit for ~$115. #17220 or somethig like that

3" downpipe ends in 94-00 4-bolt exhaust flange.

2 1/2" crossover pipe

Major correction.........................

I have a GM-5 turbo with the verticle wastegate, with a vacume or pressure type fitting on the end and a small hole on the side of the bottom half.

I was certain I read GM-4 before but obviously was mistaken. But still NO spring loading in either direction.

I have a 4 wheel drive, Old body style 1987, yes there is a drive shaft but not sure it would be in the way.

GM-5 is a slightly better turbo. Exhaust turbine diameter is slightly larger than the GM3&4.

well for once I make a mistake that leaves me on the better side of where I thought I was.

The cross-over pipe will need some massaging to clear the front driveshaft.

The 6.5L is just a bored 6.2L, no differences, even to same balance specs.

Everything fits everywhere - later blocks got one-piece rear main seal, EFI harminic balancer has different snout\collar length to clear crank position reluctor.

Vans\Hummers have different intake manifold\heads interface - later versions got high-center rear-mounted turbo.

3" stainless steel downpipe will need some rework with a fine-toothed blade and an arc wrench.

Ford Powerstroke has high-chrome stainless 3.5" exhaust system, can be easily modified to fit.

'87 don't need no steenkin' soot traps, mistakenly called by most, the 'catalytic' convertor (no catalyst required for Diesel fuels) - so get extra system piping to make up.

The Ford muffler is also of high-quality polishable stainless steel, and suits my noise requirments, as well as being non-restrictive, from a larger, higher output engine.

Cool, so the ford powerstroke system is easier to modify than the 88 - up body style system 6.5 exhaust. Any particular year range for the ford system? Not a ford guy so don't know the body year changes.
