my dad has got this school bus B700, he uses it to bring pigs to the butcher house and its got an 8.2L detroit 4 stroke diesel in it with an automatic transmission, the tranny took a dump the other day. do any of you know what kind of transmission it is?? there are a few numbers on it but i cant find a name. would a manual transmission from a from a ford 700 gasser grain truck bolt onto it? the bolt pattern looks the same, we would need another flywheel tho does anyone know which flywheel would fit on that detroit??
and would an allison 545 bolt on to it??
any help would be appriciated thanks
here are the numbers i took off this tranny
on the side plate it says:
23012742
EIHT 7003CEA
internal filter model is:
filtran
MicroFelt tm.
and on a plate on the firewall it says
Trans:
AA
RGAWR

If it is a 4 speed it is most likely a 540. That series also had a 543 and a 545. I believe the 545 is a 5 speed with a compounder at the rear for a really low first gear. None of them are overdrives, their top gear is direct drive. They are really simple transmissions, and the 500 series uses alot of turbo 400 parts.

So were they a really durable transmission?

They are pretty good. They have a bit of a strange feel to them because they have a small amount of bindup on shifts. They don't have any bands, they are all clutches and no sprags. Consequently, they have to release a clutch when another clutch applies. This causes a momentary bindup that slows the vehicle slightly. The valve body has trimmer valves to adjust the shifts. The allisons in the Dmaxs uses the computer to optimize the shifts, so they feel better. They held up pretty well, most of the older diesels weren't the torquers they are now.
