Just got a racor model 660R fuel/water separator for my truck.Need to still purchase the R90S element,2 micron.Has anybody tried this filter, and where would be the best location to mount this setup?

The 660R has produced some excellent results in several locations. OCDmax(Frame rail) ; Hoot(under air box) and Frank Blum-Lone Eagle Mount(On side of AC compressor) I'm sure there are others but these come to mind. There is a spread sheet somewhere around here that shows the test results of several filters and locations. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Edited by: a bear

This is the filter I have on my truck. No problems what so ever. I change it every 8,000 miles. I made a bracket that uses the same bolts that holds the stock filter on so the filter sits between the oem and the battery. Takes less than 2 minutes to change filters.

Mounted mine down on the frame rail in front of fuel tank; easy to get to and out of sight for the most part; check www.lubespecialist.com (http://www.lubespecialist.com) for possible frame mounting bracket and filters.

I am looking for a secondary fuel filter system, because at 9K miles, already had to have my injectors changed. (03' LB7) I am interested in the FASS filter system, but seems a bit expensive.

Can anyone give me an idea of the benefits of the FASS versus some of these other filters, please? Also, if the FASS is not the way to go, just for everyday driving and towing an 8Klb trailer, what is a good filter system to purchase? (also, where can I find some of these filters?) Thanks alot for your help. Steve

I had looked at the FASS system and did not like the price and some of the other issues I had with the system.

You can check out the Nictane system which is sold by the owner of this site. Do a search.

I went with the Racor 660 system with water sensor and heat from www.lubespecialist.com (http://www.lubespecialist.com) (a supporting vendor here) and mounts down on the frame rail. Supposedly has GM's blessing.

Just some thoughts.

Pony Driver,

I think the best way to look at the different types of secondary fuel filters available is to determine where you want to put it, how skilled are you or the person that is going to put it on, and how much money you want to spend.

I went with a Racor 660 Frame Rail kit from Greg due to the ease of installation and location. For me, price was third on my selection list.

I'm sure I could have saved money by putting the filter system together myself but, I'm at the point in my life where my time cost more than the cost savings would be.

The short answer, Choose a kit that you feel comfortable with installing and locating. They all do a great job at filtering over no additional filter at all.

If that's not enough for you, add 2 filters. They're cheap when you compare to the cost of fuel system work.. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif

Pony Driver,

The main point to take from the Fuel Test Data (http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO/OC_Dmax.pdf) is that all the 2-micron filters - BALDWIN, CAT & RACOR (in alphabetical order) have demonstrated their ability to meet or exceed the target ISO code values of 15/13/10 (lower is better - best results to-date are highlighted in yellow). There are various pros and cons to the different installations but any of the filters will be a value-add to your truck (IMHO). Also keep in mind that sampling technique and pump fuel quality play a big role in determining the final test results. This can also explain some of the small differences seen between the various filter setups that have been tested.

The test say get one. Which one has too many variables to say brand X is the best. I just put on 2 extra filters so I can sleep better at night.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif

Pony Driver,

As noted above any of the three do a better job than factory and
depending on the service writer, any could affect the warranty. All
three can be mounted pre-OEM with the intent of saving the warranty
after the factory filter. I suspect the fuel test results you are
looking at are all post-OEM which is considered the better way to go
for cleaning the fuel. I don't think anyone will refute that more
filtering isn't better, be it pre or post OEM. Any mod can affect
the warranty. If that is a major concern some will wait until
after the warranty is done before modifying the vehicle. You may want
to talk to your service writer/dealer and find out what they will
install and warranty.

Since the OEM filters are downstream from the "pre-OEM" auxiliary filters there is less cause for denial of warranty service.

Many members who have installed "Post-OEM" filtration reported no-start, or, stalling problems and the need to frequently prime trapped air from their filters.

Vendors will sell you their post-oem filters and then sell you an additional lift pump to make them work reliably.

I've had the Nictane pre-oem CAT filter for set-up 15,000 w/o any incidents of no-start or stalling. To the contrary the truck seemed to run smoother.

The single time my truck had trouble starting was after towing from sea level into much colder and less dense air at an elevation of over 10,000 feet.

At first I checked the prime but no air came out so I am still not sure of the cause. After letting the truck sit for a few minutes it started right up after the initial no start.

Since we are talking fuel filters here just want to ask a question. Had Transfer flow in bed tank installed back in March, also had a filter put in so fuel filters as it transfers to oem tank. Bought a spare filter when this job was done, that I installed this week. Now for question... where can I get stanadyne 100 series fuel filter? In fact part number is either 35614 or 35612, these are different lenths that is all. Really looking for longer one 35612. Dealer that put in tank is too far from home..anyone?
