I need to put new shoes on my trailer queen - 2005 2500HD DMax LT/CC 4x4. I don't do a lot of what you folks call "off road". Sand and cow pastures are about as "off road" as I go. About 1/3 of the miles on this truck are towing, and preserving my towing ability is very important to me (no tail wagging the dog stuff please).
265 tires:
Pro: Much less up-front costs. Most vendors sell a 265 class E. Use stock wheels. Dealer can set tire size in computer. Not a bad looking tire.
Con: Less grip than the 285? Won't look quite a nice as 285's would?
Is 265's on a 6.5" wheel safe for towing? My (current) max load is about 7000lbs.
If I level the truck, will these tires (also) look like pizza cutters?
285 tires:
Pro: I like the way the looks. Leveling the truck to fit these tires is OK with me too.
Con: Must buy (Cognito) leveling kit. Must buy new wheels, and I don't like the looks of most of what's out there (it's a TRUCK, not a Pimp-mobile!). Not as many vendors sell a 285 class E. Got to find a way to tell the computer about tire size.
How will the larger 285 tire effect towing? Doesn't this in effect change my gear ratio, and therefor the torque I can put to the ground?
These aftermarket electro widgets that let you change tire size - what *exactly* does this do? In other words, will my (in dash) speedo be correct? The odometer? How about the fuel economy reading in my DIC (what num-skull at GM came up with *that* acronym)? ABS issues? Tranny shift points - an issue or not?
Leveling of trucks... How does that impact towing?
