I had a thought over the weekend. On my Harley [2001], I can buy a module that will enable me to open my garage door by turning on the high beams. I am guessing that you can set the dip switches on the module to coincide with your door opener and then when you power up the high beams it sends the signal to the opener. I'm thinking that this would be great for my truck since GMC doesn't see it in their heart to give us the HomeLink setup from factory. IIRC this sells for around 100.00 in Canuck Bucks.

Has anyone either tried this setup on their truck or wired one up on their bike? I haven't made it to the Harley stealer yet [these guys make the GM stealers look like a charity] to check the system out.

To entertain the electrical wizards on this forum, could this be done with a normal garage door opener? I'm thinking using a feed from the high beam relay to power the door opener. I can't see why the opener couldn't be mounted under the hood in the fuse panel with the power wire that is supposed to be hooked to the battery going to the high beam relay. Would a low amperage 12 volt signal cook a system that is designed to use a 9 volt battery?

Here's something for the masses to ponder....

Here's another thought. Instead of using the headlight relay that will put current through the opener whenever the high beams are on, how about using something like the cargo light or something that won't have power running through it all the time?

Yes it could be done with a normal garage door opener.

You can pickup used homelink overhead consoles for under $100 on ebay if you look for a while. I like this option because it allows me to program 3 doors.

And if you don't want to do what MP suggests, you can just use any ole' switch, whatever style you like and mount it where ever you want. Wire that into the garage door opener in place of the installed button and viola, your very own homey-link.

Hmmm another use for the switch on the ATS mount

I have one of the modules on my harley and it works with any door opener and could be used on your truck also

I couldn't see why it wouldn't work. I like the idea of having a hidden system to get rid of the clutter in the cab. The HomeLink setup is nice, but I only need one door opener. Thanks for all the input. Jeff
