Maverick 10-25-2003, 02:36 PM Thanks JEBar.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Max Power, I have towed alot in the 3500's life time. Not as much as Broker though. Name it.....I've probably hauled it.
Tsckey, the thread is not about me. Looking at one pic is boring, more is better. Just trying to show alittle of everything that I have pics of. An RV is an RV. Everyone has seen them. Save those pics for the RV forum. Nothing against them....I even owned a 28 ft 5th wheel.
I would still like to see some HEAVY load pics from you guys (& gals).

Not a Dmax but the tractor width was over 9' wide, automatic oversized load. This was the first semi I drove load and all. Didn't bother to get any miles on empty first.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/ZD5_10_ton.jpg
case680e 10-30-2003, 02:33 PM 25 or so years ago, my dad told me to take a load of shelled corn up to the local feed mill. We had a 73 C-30 Chevy with a 8x12 flat bed and 4 foot grain sides. We had added a stronger helper spring to the rear as well as a 3 leaf helper to the front. It had the 350, 4 speed, 4.56 gears and G rated tires. I started filling the truck and watched the rear wheels-bed clearance. The truck got full before anything bottomed out so I drove the three miles to the elevator and unloaded. The weight slip came back at 13,900 pounds of corn.
The heaviest load I ever towed was a wagon load of green pin oak logs. Five logs 14" to 26" diameter and 14 feet long. They were loaded on a flat bed wagon on a Cobey tandem/tandem 20 ton running gear. We added two ton of gravel to the truck as ballast. I had to go about 20 miles to get to the sawmill. I never weighed it but the truck ran out of power at 35 mph in third gear on flat roads.
The things we did when we were young and stupid!

Here's one for you. Not my Dmax, but the truck it replaced. That's a JD 5500 with a Howard HR30 rotavator. When the front end loader is on the tractor, the trailer tandems scale out at 10,100.

Heavy enough for a DuraMax? 12 Bags weighing around 2200-2400 lbs each. Do this about twice a week this time of year.
The Duramax sure pulls it better then my old 2000 with the 454 did. Edited by: dutch

dutch 11-22-2003, 11:43 PM Yeah, it comes across the scales at around 41K or so, give or take a little. A don't have to haul it very far. About 10 miles.
Loaded a Caterpillar tractor (CH 45) once and hauled it about 20 miles. Was going to haul it to the dealer but decided it was too heavy for the distance (100 miles). I was at 50K that time according to the scales at the gin.
White Duramax 11-23-2003, 07:52 PM The most Ive towed with my old truck, not the Max, 94 2500 4x4 350/5sp. pulled 3-350bushel wagons behind it. Moved them around the barn. All three at once, total amount was just over 1000 bushels so it comes close to 56000lbs plus the wagons themselves- around 60,000+ total, this doesnt put any weight on the truck for those of you that arent farmers, just like dead weight, it would be a b*tch to stop!!
Dmax Tim 11-24-2003, 07:18 AM I had to use 4 wd to get a 400 bu wagon of beans to roll on a gravel driveway.
On asphalt it wasn't bad, good thing the 94 had rear antilock brakes.

Looks heavy duty.
I have 12 15" Good year Marathon trailer tires for sale off my cargo trailers. Most of them are new with tags still on them.

~4000 lb of cap for a block wall, split the load onto 3 pallets, loaded onto forks of a tractor, couldnt lift, rated at 1000 lbs. I pulled back, didnt lower the load enough, and had the tractor on 2 wheels in the driveway. Leaned, and luckily it righted. Nearly crapped my pants. Wont do that again. Much heavier than it looks...

Rented a box trailer to move some topsoil. When they asked, I told them "bark." Weight limit was like 1500 lbs. I bet I got at least 4500 in there before I said no mas. 6 scoops of wet topsoil. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif The dumbasses loaded it up so that there was at least -300 lb tongue weight. It rode like CRAP. If I gassed it everso slightly in gears 1-2, it would spin. I had to put it in 4x4 to make it up our road (at least 25% grade) Did it again, but had them load it in the front of the trailer more. Rode like a Caddy...The tires on the trailer were half flat when loaded...Ha.

mpl897 02-15-2004, 05:56 AM HOW DOES THAT BOX TRAILER LOAD HANDLE IN THE WIND??http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
tn traveler 02-15-2004, 03:18 PM It's like pulling a paracute when theres no wind, when the wind is blowing it can get intence.Add slick roads and wind I usually find a place to park.I've been taking them from TN. to DE.,for some reason I have to keep both hands on the wheel crossing the Bay bridge, must have lost my nerve or mind.I am thankful that GOD watches over me.
Never hauled anything large with the D but the largest load was when we move the 330 Link Belt or 330 Hitachi. Tandem drive axle Mack with tag. 450HP Turbo, 13speed, and a tri-axle lowboy. The machine itself is 11'6" wide and weighs in aroun 85,000 to 86,000. All said and done we are well over the 100,000lb. mark.

mannytranny 02-23-2004, 05:16 PM Horse Trainer -
Where is that? Looks like nice scenery out there...Utah, NM Texas?
I just love the red dirt...
A fella had a rig like that around here the other day. He pulled off the road, and onto an incline. I thought for sure he was going to tip it over into the road...Bet you gotta be careful with that...
Horse Trainer 02-24-2004, 08:31 PM Manny - good catch. New Mexico it is. Dead of winter here. Much wetter now than in picture. I have also come close to putting the hay side on the ground - I am much more selective where I put the trailer theses days.
baimpala 03-06-2004, 12:11 AM Here is a shot of most of my truck and trailer, the fatty in front is me. Just made the trip from Bremerton, Washington to Newport, Rhode Island, total weight without the fatty; 21180. I'm almost embarrassed as I thought that was pretty heavy before I saw some of your rigs.

Pretty neat. I drove pretty much on the border of NM and AZ a few months back. Alpine is a pretty cool place. The entire drive was great. Up from Las Cruces to I40 @ Holbrook.
I could stand to spend much more time in that area!
Coghlin 03-18-2004, 08:39 PM I have pulled gravity wagons full of soybeans with my old '97 6.5TD weighing in at about 50000 lbs(not counting truck). Just wanted to see if it would pull it. I pulled it about a mile and unhooked the two wagons and backed them separately in the shed. I pulled it in 4lo. There is no such thing as brakes with that.
Cougar281 03-23-2004, 12:31 AM Hey baimpala, how long is that trailer? How did it pull?
I'm looking to get an '04 LLY/Allison CC 4x4, and in about a year an a half pull a 44' or 48' gooseneck (enclosed) with 2 cars and household stuff from NY to AK...
baimpala 03-23-2004, 09:14 AM Couger 281,
First off, let me say, I LOVE this trailer, I had not owned a trailer before and was a little apprehensive about it, but after I drove around with it a little bit and got some confidence driving it, it was no big deal. The truck and trailer without me in it was weighed at a certified scale at 21,180 pounds. Maybe not as much as some guys carry, but still seemed like a lot after I weighed it (of course this was at the end of the trip, my estimates were around 20,000 maybe a little under). The weight adds up QUICK! I pulled a Mini Cooper (only about 2350 lbs), some woodworking tools (maybe 1,500 lbs) and some other household goods, and was quickly over 21k. The trailer alone weighs 5355 lbs. Sounds like you will be pulling way more than I did.
It is a 32' Autowagon (widebody) from Wells Cargo. Since this was my first trailer, I never really pushed it, plus crossing the Blue Mountain Ridge in Idaho, there was about an inch of ice on the roads, so all the big rigs were going literally 5 MPH the whole way. The transmission hit about 150 degrees, engine stayed dead on at 210 the whole way.
Crossing the Rockies, we took I-70. That was a little worse. When we went over Vail pass, I was down to about 45 MPH. No heat up whatsoever on transmission, stayed about 110-120 the whole way, and engine at 210. Outside temp was -5 degrees at the top (11,000 ft +). I do feel like I could have pushed it a little harder, but the truck was so new and there really wasn't any reason to push it.
On the flat roads and smaller hills, I barely knew there was a trailer behind me, what an awesome truck. I always towed in tow-haul mode and with overdrive inhibit on. I am a lead-foot, but when towing I would routinely go only 55 mph with the cruise on, sometimes 60. IIRC, I got 12 MPG the entire trip. If you wanted to cruise in O/D you could probably get better mileage, but for me, the peace of mind was worth whatever it costs. Didn't want to have something explode on the road with two small kids and the wife in there with me.
Hope it helps,
DennisEdited by: baimpala
