I just took a test drive on an 01 duramax diesel with an allison transmission. The owner told me not to expect overdrive until the tranny warms up. the rpm was above 2000 for about 10 minutes down the highway, then as he said, it went into OD and the rpm went below 2000. Is this normal?

Its normal! It's programed that way to allow it to warm up faster. It will also shift at a higher RPM when cold. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

totally normal.....
It takes a few miles down the interstate in the morning to get it to shift into OD......

What you probably saw was the torque converter locking up. It kind of feels and looks like a shift when looking at the tach. Edited by: Max Power

Completely normal, although it is in overdrive, the converter is just not locked until the gauge bumps above 100.
