Hello below there is a field service that on a 2004 Duramac forgive my ignorance but does this mean that it has drum brakes? I figured all pickups were using disc brakes? Thanks

the brakes are discs all around. BUT the parking brake uses a "drum in disc" type setup. The parking brake is basically two expanding shoes that fit into the hat on the rear [disc] rotors. Ill see if I can find a picture. So the parking brake is a drum, but the 'real' brakes are all discs. Its kind of a stupid setup IMHO.

It's stupid until you reminisce back to Grandprixs and Z28s with the park brake actuator built into the caliper.

It really is a good system, but it needs a bit of attention. People who use the park brake often and keep it adjusted have few problems with it. Those who only use it once or twice a year aren't happy with it. I set mine every time the truck is in park and have no problems with it.

i am with you on that one boondokr my first dmax already had 160k on it when i got it and the park brake didnt work enought to use it safely. The new truck is a stick so it gets used alot and works great that was the one thing that i kinda thought i was going to have problems with but not yet i love it just my .02

I agree, mine gets used everyday and it holds the truck.

The main problem comes from people who don't use it very often. The parking brake is designed to auto adjust every time you use it. If you rarely use it then the pads wear down over time and the parking brake is unable to make such a large adjustment the first time you use it. Sometimes the pads are just worn out and need to be replaced. When I bought my first silverado I had to manually adjust the parking brake due to it never being used. Worked like a champ afterwards. Your parking brake should be able to hold 1.5 times the idle rpm in drive. In other words if your truck idles at 600 rpm, then the parking brake should hold up to 900 rpm while in drive. When buying a used vehicle that is one thing you should check every time. Hope this helps.
