: My brother needs some help with grinding noise

My brother down in South Texas is having problems with his 2004.5 CCSB. He has a 6" Fabtech lift and is running 35" BFGs. Push button 4x4.

When he had to put the truck in 4x4 this weekend to get through some mud, he said that the 4x4 engaged, but made a grinding noise the entire time. 4L and 4H both made the same noise.

No fluid leaks that he can see, and he said that he had his front diff fluid changed out 3 months ago, and it is full. I suggested that he double check it and his t-case levels just to be sure.

What do you think the problem might be?

Thanks,

Bud

Any suggestions? He drives the beach fairly regularly, and knows how to engage 4x4, so I do not think that it is operator error.

I would first check the transfer case lube level. Since that is a common issue with pump rubs etc...

Mine made the most horrific metal on metal sliding noise in 2 wd, then I did the upgrade and replaced the case half and all is well.

Don't know about the grinding, but I would X2 the check fluid level first and inspect everything I could. But read this as well.....

Brother just got back from the shop. The report is that the front dif is "all ground up", and he is looking at $2500 for a complete replacement.

It might have started with the pinion bearing, per Tolliwacker's link.
