These procedures outline and easy step by step procedure I used to replace my tranny fluid. These steps do not include any modifications to the system (bigger pan). Any input to these instructions are welcome, however these worked great for me.
1. Prepare bucket with qt increments marked on the side to show how much fluid has been drained. (4 gallon bucket works great)
2. Drain transmission from pan. (5qts is what I got)
3. Remove spin on filter and let drain. (1.5 qts is what I got)
4. Replaced spin on filter with new (Make sure magnet is in place, clean before reinstalling)
5. Reinstall drain plug in transmission pan.
6. Replenish drained fluid adding an additional 3qts. (Added 10qts)
7. Unhook “From Cooler” line from Tranny by removing c-clip. (Passenger side)
8. I used a 5ft. ¾” diameter hose that fits tight on the tranny line just removed (from cooler line). I ran the line under the truck over to the driver side door and put into the 4 gallon bucket so I could monitor while I started the truck and let it run.
9. Started the engine and tranny fluid started filling the bucket. (Removed approximately 9qts)
10.Stopped engine once I got to 9qts.
11.Reinstalled tranny line into fitting on transmission.
12.Filled tranny using fill tube under the hood (added 7qts) and use the “cold check procedure”.
13.Started truck and went through gears while foot brake was applied.
14.Drove truck 15 minutes to warm up tranny fluid and rechecked using “hot check”
15.Drink cold beer and be proud of accomplishments.
Many thanks go out to “RaceHemi” for assisting me via email and by phone. I would like to add that for some reason I had a little mess to clean up while I was running the truck and draining the 9qts of tranny fluid. My guess is that it came out through the hole in the tranny that the “from cooler” line goes into. I advise having an extra small bucket to catch what comes out of that hole. Also write down the amount of fluid that is extracted each time so you know exactly how much to go back in with. This makes it much easier to bring it to operating level without second guessing yourself.
