Well, I don't think that Mercedes builds V8 Diesel engines. They don't have any on the passenger cars or SUVs they sell here, and those for the large trucks (GVWR 40 metric tons) are mostly, if not all, inline 6.

If you are to get a V8, do buy an American one.

I have heard many different stories as to what Dodge is going to do with the Cummins. Haven't heard Mercedes, but I did hear Detroit Diesel (which would make sense as DaimlerChrysler owns a portion of Detroit Diesel). I've also heard that they may start putting in two different diesels, the Cummins as the "base" diesel and the [insert whatever other brand] as the "premium" diesel.

I have HEARD (but have no data to back this up) that Ford currently offers the Cummins in the F-450 and F-550. If that's true, then the transition to putting them in the F-250 and F-350 would be a simple one.

The PS 7.3 has always been a good motor, and the PS 6.0 is actually a good motor. It's a Navistar engine that you see powering a bunch of International trucks very reliably. The problem (from what I've read) with the PS 6.0 is that Ford bought the engine, but they did all the fueling and electronics themselves. Somehow, they screwed it up really badly (they don't always; they didn't on the PS 7.3), and that's been causing all the issues that you see with these trucks. Of course, then Navistar is saying "Not our fault!" and Ford is saying "Yes it is!"

Cummins does all the fueling and electronics for the 5.9 that goes into the Dodges. Makes things more expensive but easier and, in this case, more reliable.

Only Mercedes diesels I've dealt with are the ones in the old 240/300Ds. Can't kill those things, but you'd lose a drag race against most pedestrians.

could someone explain exactly what an "American one" is in today multi-country owner world?

i have heard from several people about dodge using mercedes in the near future. it wont be a v8 or I6, it will be a I5. mercedes makes very good motors for some european ag equipment companies, i think fendt and claas might be a couple. for the last couple of years and maybe longer, you can get an f650 or f750 with either a powerstroke, cummins, or cat.

not true... Ford is going to start using Cummins, and Dodge aka Daimler-chrysler is talking with Catapiller.
