Sure wish GM had larger oem tanks for the extended cab!

Main reason I bought the 2500HD is for trailering sleds and quads from CT up to northern NH and VT. Usually a one way 325 mile or so trip. I know I have one stop along the way off I91 and possibly another further north since the further north the less gas stations.

I was looking at the Transfer Flow 45 gal midship tank and not sure if that inch below the cross member is a concern for possible puncture. I see a lot of posts where the tank was installed so I figure it is not a big deal. I don't see any skid plate offered.

I am not planning on serious off road with the truck and more of a toy hauler in possible bad weather conditions.

I bought a Titan tank and it does come with a simple plastic skid plate. I have no idea if it would protect it that much but its a start.

When I had my 2004 Dodge 1 ton 4X4, I had the Transfer Flow replacement tank that also hung down that extra inch below the frame. I used that truck to haul quads and a toy hauler into the desert and never had a problem. It is an exposure issue only on ground with large boulders but I think you'll take out some other important parts & pieces prior to hitting the tank. On my 2007 D/A, I went with the in-bed Transfer Flow combo tool box & 50 gal tank. I wanted the 84 gallon total obtainable with the long bed. All comes down to where you want to mount the tank and what part of your truck bed you can afford to give up. The replacement tank is a nice piece of equipment and if 45 gal will do the job, go for it.

I've had two Tranfer Flow tanks, one is on my 06 DMax. If you don't plan on any serious off roading you won't have any problems. The steel used to build these tanks is pretty rugged, it would take a pretty serious blow to do much damage. I don't believe the lack of a skid pan presents much of a problem. Installation is straight forward and the instructions are excellent. You will appreciate the extra miles available without loss of bed space.

The Transfer Flow tank will take more abuse than the stock tank will even though the stock tank has a shield! They are beefy.
