: Is it worth it?

I met a rep from the local Allison sales and service at an RV show yesterday. Since I know nothing about the Allison, I thought I'd pick his brain about the care and feeding of it. His recommendation was to replace the factory fluid with Transynd. He also recommended replacing the oil pan w/a 3/4 Gal larger pan at the same time.

He claimed that this would reduce operating temperatures (I'm going to tow a fifth wheel), increase transmission life, and increase the transmission service intervals. Cost is $350.

Two questions:

1) Are his statements accurate?

2) Is $350 reasonable for this kind of service? I'm a mechanical zero, so there's no way that I'd attempt this myself.

I think its a personal preference thing with the fluid. I personally use transynd, but thats my opinion. I figure its approved by allison, and if you don't run it when you have an exteneded warrantee on other allison trannies(not ours) its not covered if your not running it. There are other suppliers that probably will protect just as good, and i'm sure everyone will chime in and let you know there opinion.

As far as the bigger pan, i never noticed a drop in temperature with my truck. I've compared it to another truck(running side by side for 6-7 hours) with the smaller stock pan and we run close enough to be the same. We both run Transynd as well.

As far as cost goes, i don''t know what fluid costs down south of the border, but i know the transynd is not cheap up here. If i had to guess i would think $350 sounds about right for fluid, pan, and labour for my neck of the woodsEdited by: heartbeatcanada

.....what Heartbeat said..... for the few dollars the deep pan costs, I wouldn't go without it, more fluid can't be a bad thing in this situation.
