Just a question. Has anybody ever perforated the inner fender on the passenger side to increase the cfm's and ease that your air cleaner breathes? I'm curious 'cause the airbox is fed from a CLOSED space.

It might be worth a little power. Pretty much anything you can do to free the airflow to the turbo inlet will be an improvement. Ram air being the ultimate.

So what if I ducted it from under/behind the front bumper, thereby creating "ram" air?

You'll get much dirt and maybe water into the filter ...

I've been thinking of making holes through the fender to the outside, i. e. into the outer side of the fender, opposite to the intake of the air box. Then put some nice chrome thingys into the holes like there were on many cars built in the 1950ies or '60ies and do the same on the other fender.

Eventually install a fan to draw air through the holes on the drivers side to cool the PMD.

That would rather look cool and be actually functional :)

winchster...I ran a 4" hose from a bumper mounted scoop. I've never seen any water in my air box and it doesn't lok as though my filter is any worse for wear, but what Olee says has got me to wondering. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Main thing is to eliminate that scrunched-up 90deg duct between the airbox and the turbo, then run an inlet duct from airbox to most anywhere thru the radiator bulkhead.

GM eliminated the in-fender duct from up front below the battery, just above bumper level, because of winter clog-up with ice and snow.

I've been intending to tell you that, spindrift, after seeing Turbine Doc's '98 truck.

I had seen only '94-'95 inlet system, where airbox-turbo ducting is considerably more open - I was astonished to see that flat 90, folded back on itself, as you can well imagine.

Mine is '94-'95 derived.

gmctd,

I've had my eye on that flattened duct for a long time trying to figure out an alternative. I'm planning to relocate the passenger side battery so there's room for the installation of a smoother 90, or better yet, a 45 to the airbox. What was TD's fix? Any other ideas?

I'll disconnect the bumper mounted scoop when the snow starts to fly. I think (quasi empirical evidence only) that the scoop has done wonders for me this past spring and summer. My need for ram air is limited to Spring thru Fall, as this is the only time the truck is hard at work. Edited by: spindrift

We - TD and I - discussed various options, from moving the airbox to the front bulkhead, to Cummins-dodge, to the new Ford 6.0 setup.

We're still thinking on it, but the hurricane got in the way - he lives 60 (ft? yds?) from the Gulf water in Mississippi.

i think i am missing something behind my bumper. when i look through the nostrils, the black plastic looks different than some of the other 6.5's i have looked at, though these were older. can somebody take a picture of a 97 or 98? this might ease my worrying.

hope td is ok...Edited by: steiner43511

Can somebody tell me what all the stuff behind my grill is. I recognize the radiator, ac condesor, but there is something else looks to be two parts all the way up front.

There's a cooler for the power steering, aux for tranny and the oil cooler.

spindrift, I´m getting stuff like leaves and insects into the airbox even through the fender. If these things can get in, dust will get in also and get stuck in the filter element where you don´t see it unless the filter becomes dirty enough. And all the dust particles that are small enough to go through the filter get into the engine.

The closer the intake is to the wheel and/or closer to the ground, the more dust is there to be sucked in. It´s the wheels that whirl up most of the dust, be it your own wheels or those on the car driving in front of you.

If you have a scoop open to the front, it´s like an invitation for the dust, water, snow, insects, leaves and whatever´s in the air (or is whirled up) to enter the airbox easyly. If you have the scoop as low as the bumper, driving through water becomes dangerous. Either the scoop will drown in the water, or water will be splashed up when going through a water-patch --- in either case, the water will be sucked into the scoop.

If you mount the scoop higher, still too much water could get in.

Making holes into the side of the fender seems less prone to sucking dirt and water, but it still can happen.

I did a little more testing with a vacuum gauge over the weekend...

Where the CDR used to get plumbed into the inlet duct, now resides my connection for my vacuum gauge. With a K&N filter, I was seeing 4in. vacuum with boost in the 15lb. range.

Next thing I could do was to remove the air cleaner lid and re-test. Much more noise from turbo. Ass-Dyno registered nothing. Vacuum gauge showed 3in. vacuum under same conditions.

Small improvement, but none-the-less, improvement.

I've always hated the duct work from the air cleaner to the turbo. I'm looking into smoothing out the flow and increasing inlet area.

I would definately take less vacuum through that inlet than colder air any day. Running without the air cleaner lid seems to be the lesser of the 2 evils.

Wonder how it would do without that squashed 90 between the airbox and the compressor inlet?

One thing we know is with the airbox lid off we never set the DP air filter blocked gauge, but then we suck in hot air from the engine bay, still doing the hurricane cleanup thing wife gives me evil eye if I pop the hood of the truck, got to " get the yard cleaned up 1st http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif" before I can start playing with the truck again.

Well Get busy LOL Just kiddin

glad to hear most of your stuff made it thur. Do you know anything about the I-10 bridge that was taken out and if there is a good, easy, short way around that problem, My family and I are coming that way in Nov to see the mouse that lives in Fl.

The I-10 bridge out of P Cola into Milton is gone East bound, damaged to unusable West bound side, they are going to try and reopen the West bound with 2 way traffic 1 lane each way mid Oct, unknown when East bound side will be fixed.Edited by: Turbine Doc
