: How does Suncoast Control Converter Lockup?
tgeisick23 09-17-2004, 03:00 PM I was just wondering how suncoast transmissions control the converter lockup?
I just recently had a ATS triple lock upgrade done with out the co-pilot. I took my truck to the track and only gained .3 seconds in the quarter mile, even though I am now stacking boxes which ATS claims should put me over 500 rwhp. I asked them how I only gained .3 seconds in the quarter mile and they are blaming it on the converter not locking up, because I didn't buy the co-pilot. Personally I think they are just trying to get me to spend another $1000.
Also this is a little off topic, but has anyone with the ATS triple lock package installed noticed that their pickup vibrates a lot at an idle? Mine does considerably more than before
Thanks in advance for the help.
Mike L. 09-17-2004, 04:28 PM TCM controls lock-up. Copilot can overide TCM and put the converter clutch on to help load the engine and build boost. I think the Copilot is a good thing, and it works.

Diesel Tech 09-17-2004, 06:34 PM One needs to remember when you go WOT the TCM locks the torque converter in second gear. So if the co-piolot locks the converter it cannot do it much lower than the stock TCM at WOT. So I believe they are feeding you aline of BS, as far as what goes on at the track.

So the torque converter should have been locked already no matter if it was with a co-pilot or no co-pilot? The main reason I didn't get a co-pilot in the first place was that it sounded like a really expensive electronic shift kit, but I am no expert on transmissions.
ATS made it sound like the converter was not locking up until 5th gear, and this is why it wasn't getting the power to the ground.
I'm really confused, I just want to know why after spending $4000 on new clutch packs and converter that I didn't see much of a gain.
Mike L. 09-17-2004, 07:45 PM I'm going to find out pretty quick.
joshz06 09-17-2004, 11:28 PM If I run in Tow Haul mode my attitude shows the converter locking in the middle of 2nd gear. With out Tow Haul mode the converter locks in 4th gear.
Mike L. 09-17-2004, 11:41 PM The attitude is not an accurate moniter of the TCC. I watch activity on my Vetronix scanner that the attitude never sees, wasn't meant to.

Might be time to have a chat with ATS about changing the converter.
On Edit: Is .3 bad?Edited by: Trippin
tgeisick23 09-18-2004, 11:09 AM A gain of .3 seconds is bad when I ran a 15.0 on a stock tranny with just a TST, then I get the transmission built up and stack a box that was to put me over 500 rwhp.
Plus I was trying a lot harder (more track prep for my truck) and only ran one 14.7 & 14.8, and the other 3 trips down the track I couldn't make full runs because the transmission either wouldn't shift under full throttle, or would do some other funky things.
Diesel Tech 09-18-2004, 06:49 PM It would be a guess to try and tell you what is going on in your truck without being there but the converter is told to lock by the stock TCM in the regular mode anytime you go WOT in second gear. If you are cruiseing it will lock in 5th. In Tow/Haul It locks just after the 1-> 2 gear change. I would go back to the single box you were running and retest again. This way you are running an apples to apples compairson.
White Duramax 09-20-2004, 05:01 PM tg23 What are you running for power? 2wd or 4wd, boosted launches? same track as before? what year of truck?
tgeisick23 09-20-2004, 07:13 PM Power wise I am stacking the ppe xcellerator with the tst on level 3,3. I am launching in 4wd boosted launches, I was cutting 1.9 sec 60ft times. It is the same track as before (bandimere), and it is a 2003 chevy duramax.
As far as differneces when I raced with and with out tranny mods. This time (with tranny mods) I was trying a lot harder. I have stock exhaust so I unbolted the flange under the cab (making it straight piped), and I lowered the torsion bars so I could launch harder.
I did make one run with just the TST like mentioned above, but I had a slow launch and reaction time so it was slower. But last year with a stock tranny I could only run on power level 9,6, and this time I ran on 9,9.
I thought that I read somewhere that people where seeing about .5 second difference at the track from installing a torque converter and clutches (which is what I did), running the same power level as before. That's why I was disappointed when I only gained .3, and I am suppose to have much more hp then before.
BassinRVer 09-21-2004, 09:13 AM My truck does not lock the convertor untill I hit 5th gear even with WOT, this is with not being in T/H mode. While in T/H mode the TC does lock up in second gear with WOT. I can not get the change oil light to reset so my throttle sensor may not be seeing WOT, I wish I knew if it did. I tried looking at trottle percentages on my Predator but could not find it on the display. I have not cut the carpet away from arounf the gas pedal so matbe I need too.
tgeisick23, next time you go to the track try using the tow/haul mode.
ratlover 09-21-2004, 09:52 AM Its hard to feel it locking up sometimes. Not getting WOT may be screwing with ya thoguh. Also the attitude dosnt react very quick with the gear changes and lock up.
MaxFarmer 09-21-2004, 02:26 PM I like the idea of just trying one box at a time and see what you get. I have found that my truck runs better with a lower setting on one (predator) and then having the other (juice) at a higher setting.
And then to exaggerate that, I tried running in 4-lo and the pickup itself was cutting-out or missing...it wasnt good. Then if I backed the juice box down it would work. *Note: this was for mud-drag racing, not 1/4 mile pavement launches.
I'm sold on the co-pilot also. It seems there is an infinite amout of ways you can controll your shifting with the thing, and it will tell you when your convertor is locked in as well.

Oops, I guess I forgot to mention that all runs were in tow/haul mode.
gmccall 09-29-2004, 08:08 AM I vote for testing with the one box again. I have know luck in stacking boxes. I am getting HP from the Timing with Attitude on 0 though, so that is a vote on a stack of sorts. I got no increase at the track with Attitude on 1 + and it was sluggush early in the run.
Also, After my tranny upgrade, I gained less than a .10. At that time I was running 9.1s. Fact was my tranny seem to be holding at those times and horspower. Always run in T/H.
