Now that the LMM's have been out, maybe you guys can answer my ?, I have posted on many boards, no answers. A guy I know drives his truck to work to and from about 5 miles each way, during the winter. MAYBE takes a short trip on the weekends to get groceries etc, but generally not. During hte summer he You seem to be knowledgable, so maybe you can answer my ?, I have posted on many boards, no answers. A guy I know drives his truck to work to and from about 5 miles each way, during the winter. MAYBE takes a short trip on the weekends to get groceries etc, but generally not. During hte summer he pulls a boat, rv etc pretty much every weekend. So what will happen to him in the winter, will he have to take it on trips???? He lives in the city so 30 min of city drivng is impossible, will high idle complete the process(can he leave it run in his driveay???? What if he doesnt let it regen , itll plug and ealer service is required correct???? What is gm doing about servicing dpfs?? Exchange????????? The machines to capture the soot are about 10,000 dollars so I am sure not every shop will have a dpfcleaning machine, but how much will exchanges be etc. I asked the local dealer, no ansowers, youd think theyd know aobut htese dpf's and cleaning htem , wont be long before somone needs a change, wrong oil, high sulfer fuel, etc somone will do it and need an exchange and it seems the dealers are clueless.
Its all up to the truck, I can command a regen w/the tech 2. He has nothing to worry about. I have yet to see or hear about and "service" procedures...

Exaclty no one knows about the service procedures, some municipalities are considering the recovered soot hazardous material as well. Serive off the truck may be required at intervals 100000, or less if wrong oil, fuel is used. Some bosy who use these trucks 10 hours a day hauling trailers etc 100000 miles isnt real far off. And none of the dealers know what to do.

I test drove the 08 ford f350 w diesel .I couldnt ge over 9-10 on the dic for a 20 mile trip at 55-65 speed . So I stuck with a duramax
03 duramax trade in for a 07 classic lbz .
I am happy with this truck .

I can shed a little more light into your question. I have an LMM. I read the manual (diesel supp) cover to cover the other day.
Regen can't/won't occur below 30 mph. I guess this is to prevent the Ford Flamethrower option.:D IF you need a regen and it hasn't been able to occur because you re in bumper to bumper traffic and never reach 30 mph a message will appear on the instrument cluster. IF you still haven't "taken your drive" to get the message to clear the truck will go into "reduced/limp" power mode until you take your 20 minutes drive or take your drive to the dealer.
I also noticed that the manual stated wrong fuel, wong oil, not driving when instructed can permanently damage the DPF and it won't be covered under warranty.... In fact I noticed a "won't be covered by your warranty" phrase a bunch of times in the manual.
I'm almost in your buddies shoes, during the week all I do is pick the kids up from school which is 7 mile each way drive in heavy city traffic. The weekends I run errands. About 5 times a year I do a medium (300 mile each way) trip and twice a year I do a 1,000+ mile each way trip. So I guess I will play it by ear.
It'll be an excuse for a late night cruise on the highway...

Exaclty no one knows about the service procedures,
What do you mean?
Service Procedures have be out since December 06.
The dealership techs have had IDL's and satellite training Since last winter!
Every dealership should have a viedo of a GM Diesel Engineer explaining the operation of the DPF.
A Techlink article was published in January.
Granted this is new technology and we are all learning but, there's a lot of information about the DPF out there.
"Serive off the truck may be required at intervals 100000, or less if wrong oil, fuel is used. Some bosy who use these trucks 10 hours a day hauling trailers etc 100000 miles isnt real far off. And none of the dealers know what to do."
At 100 - 125k miles DPF service off the truck will be required due to ash build in the DPF. Regeneration will not burn off ash, ash is the result of normal oil consumpsion that makes it way to the exhaust filter. There will be an exhange programm or an outside vendor will take the DPF and perform cleaning.

Everyone is making to much of a concern about this regen process.Just drive and enjoy.I have been doing short trips for a month, about 1,000 miles and the process is transparent. The only time I can tell is the idle is slightly higher during regen. As to oil, fuel disclaimers in the manual, they are in all manuals including gas, hybrids etc.Obviously if you use the wrong fuel such as off road etc, your on your own for repairs. You will not have a problem with short trips.

As far as serviceing is concerned.... the dpf's are on parts restriction meaning if there is an issue, basically all we can do is replace it and send the old one in for evaluation. You would be surprised at how far behind that GM will leave the service department when dealing with new technology. Being a Canadian dealer is even worse,we seem to get things a few months after it has been released in the US.
