Howdy gang,

As most of you know I have a 96 3500 4X4. The truck is used for farm type work during the week and tons of highway driving on weekends. (I play steel guitar all over TX). I have useds Amsoil 5W-30 for the last 200,00 miles. The truck now has 265k on it. Oil consuption is becoming about 3/4 quart every tankful of fuel (approx 520 miles) I switched to Amsoil 15w-40 against the recomendation of the amsoil folks. The consuption has slowed to about 1/2 qt per tank.

My question is this, can I switch to dello 400 or something to offset the cost of $8.00 per qt of Amsoil? Also the remote filters are 15 and 20 bucks each. This seems like alot of money for a truck this old. Granted i will have to change oil more often will I kill anything by doing this? how much more can this engine possibly run? I have had 1 problem with it so far Im sure it was the pmd but i replaced ip not knowing any better. also had lost turbo Quantam came and fixed it in about 20 seconds. Please advise Tell me what you really think.

P.S. I am sure I will replace engine when it dies. I have never had a truck that was so comfortable and rides so nice good fuel economy and few mechanical issues. Also have amsoil atf drain every 60 k original auto trans works fine.

sorry for the long post

My Best,

Justin

as many miles as you have on your truck, it should be perfectly fine to go back to a conventional 15w40, like dello or rotella. these oils are a lot cheaper than your amsoil, but are also very good oils. also pennzoil longlife 15w40 has been known to reduce consumption (read this a lot on www.bobistheoilguy.com (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com)). and i wouldnt worry about the remote filters, go and get a fram or wix for 5 bucks and be done.

if you still want the benefits of a synthetic, you should try schaeffer's 7000 supreme 15w40. it usually sells for $10-11 a gallon. Edited by: steiner43511

Justin,

If your lucky you'll get another 100,000-200,000 before the oil consumption or the head gasket catch up with you. Rotella synthetic 15w40 is $12 a gallon at walmart. I've always run regular($4) filters on the remote.
