: Homemade Mudflaps..decent type.
steakman 04-01-2007, 02:06 AM This may not be a big thing but it kinda bugged me that to buy a nice set of stiff strong mudflaps with the nice metal plates on em, was gonna cost me $ 145.00 CAD per pair.!
B$ on the that..!! I said to myself...we can do that for just a tad less and have some fun in the doin.!
I went to Princess Auto (Canadian version of Harbour Freight), picked up 2 sets of large mudflaps (3/8" thick Mtl.), I think they were meant for a dually type of install, and cut them down to the right size: 18" X 12", rounded the bottom corners and then added some 16 ga. Aluminum Checker plate fastened with #10 X 24 Stainless machine bolts/Nylock nuts and voila, decent looking mudflaps.!
Total cost 26.00 for the orig flaps, 14.00 for the SS machine bolts and 10.00 for the Al checker plate.
3 hours fabricating/installing. + 3 Beer & the best part was that I didn't have to help cleanin the house.! yea baby...I knew there was a reason I have a garage with tools.
Cheers,
Theo

Yea well, I had to pace my self...there was 2 btls of good S. Aussie Shiraz sitting on the table for dinner...and I kinda figured the wife and I were about to make honest MT bottles of em before an awesome homemade Italian dinner was over....and then came the Espresso with some GM...(OyVey..the work..!!:p: ), had to get ready for the Flames game of course. Flames 3 Vancouver 2. :D
ya gotta love it.!

06bowtie_guy 04-01-2007, 05:03 PM Looks good. I want to install some decent ones before the fishing season starts, dirt roads and my boat trailer don't get along.

caswell 04-02-2007, 06:22 PM those are sweet! excellent job and I was looking at those same flaps at Princess myself!
Puffer 04-02-2007, 06:45 PM I got the ones the dealer sell over the counter , they way to short.
philtopgun 04-02-2007, 06:54 PM man, those are insane nice. Excellant work. Cant believe fer a piece of crap rubber and some thin metal, they wanna charge 150 bucks. But ya know peep will spend the money, so they will keep chargin' an arm n leg. Maybe you should put ur set on ebay for 119, then b able to make a couple more!
DetroitDan 04-03-2007, 02:27 AM you stole my idea! seriously, after looking at the expensive store bought ones I figured "I can make that". And I can-the only question is when will I get off my butt and actually make them... I've had my truck for four years with no mudflaps. Guess I'm in no hurry.
Railer24 04-03-2007, 03:14 AM I got the ones the dealer sell over the counter , they way to short.
X2, hell yeah they're too short. chipped paint all over behind my rear wheel well. I'm definatley planning on making some just like these, They look Great!!
Great Job
boondokr 04-03-2007, 02:20 PM I built a similar set (but no metal yet.) I mounted mine to a 1 1/4 inch black pipe slid into the stock reciever hitch. Better protection for the trailer and no way to rip them off while backing over a curb.
steakman 04-03-2007, 08:42 PM those are sweet! excellent job and I was looking at those same flaps at Princess myself!
uhoh..gonna have to patent em..!! LOL
Yea for the price eh..13 bucks for a pair of those dually types..I just had to try.! There are times I just love going to Princess Auto.!! And ya know I actually shopped at Harbour Freight once too, while I was in the Bay area on business. Bought a Sawzall - Chinese made of course. but I've had it for 5 years and actually used/needed it occasionally..darn thing still works like a charm. Paid all of 13. USD for it..!
ya Gotta love that.

dozerboy 04-03-2007, 08:49 PM I got semi mud flaps and made mine, but I would use the plastic ones not rubber if I did it again. I have rubber and when I hit the brakes they swing into the tire, grab, flip over and rub on the tire until I stop and back up or flip them down.
steakman 04-04-2007, 01:00 AM I spoke to mine and told them if they pulled that stunt, I would remove them from the truck...funny they did not respond..(-%
good point dozer .. shall have to watch for that.
