When My trailer is fully loaded it weighs over 10,000lbs. My 5spd Allison and LLY will hold 5th gear at 70mph on some pretty good grades. I'm wondering how the extra 6th gear does. Does it cause more shifting or will it hold 6th gear and how well? Anybody have any experience with the two trannys towing? Does the extra hp and trq of the LBZ make up the difference? Thanks for any input.

GDK,

I've pulled a 10,000 toy box with both LLY and LBZ. The lbz holds 6th very well. I pulled to and from San Antonio with no downshifting. The LBZ definitely has the torgue to hold 6th and I was running 75-80 at will without laboring the truck at all. Nice contrast to my buddies powerstroke which is a dawg, can't pull, lousy torque and a stupid transmisson. You will be very happy with the way an LBZ pulls compared to the LLY. Mileage was about the same, believe it or not.

Are you talking about the new Allisons or the 6 speed mod kit for the old?

Smoop stated in post #14, if using the 6th gear mod in the older Allisons, 6th gear is locked out when in Tow-Haul. Not sure about the new Allisons.

I pull a 10000# 5th wheel and the transmission holds 6th gear fine...

Yup, I've pulled 100,000 pounds with my 2006 D/A LBZ, the OEM six-speed Allison holds sixth-gear on hills just fine; even our Oregon hills.

My 5er weighs about 15,000 lbs, no problems in 6th, in fact I think it does better in 6th than my LLY did in 5th.

I havent towed much w/my 6spd. We pull a lot w/the 5spd duramax at work, imo its not worth ugradign your 5spd into a 6spd or trading your truck for. Its nice, but like i aid not worth the money of the upgrade, or trading a truck for.

Like a ROCK, baby! Like a ROCK!

Mine holds 6th fine towing my tag-along - even heading into the mountains of NH or VT @ 65.
