I was just wondering if the intercooler upgrade was more for temperature safety or a power upgrade.

neither, its a power keeping upgrade.. As you pull hard say up a mountain pass, the IAT (Intake air temperature) starts to climb, due both to Charles Law, V1/V2 = T1/T2 and heat transfer in the turbocharger.

What a intercooler does is to loose the heat, so the charge is more dense going into the compression cycle..

also keeps the EGT (exhaust gas temperature) down.. thus leading to less heat transfer in Turbo..

so what you going to notice is that you dont necessarily have more power, but you keep the power at higher boost levels and are able to maintain higher boost without the ECM cutting back fuel which is where the power is REALLY coming from..

my ecm has the heath chip in it, does this mean that it wouldn't cut power even if it was getting too hot, and therefore it would be more for safety

There are many right answers for that, but you'll need to talk to Bill for the correct version.............
