: New Cummins, Want Some POWER!
the496rocket 09-14-2004, 10:51 PM I just got my 99 Cummins 24V, it is all stock except for a K/N Air Filter, I am looking to get some more power out of it. Should I go with Injectors? or a performance chip? not both at the moment. I have heard rumors that bigger injectors are easier on the VP44. I Dont know what to go with, I know the 12V much better, I hope you guys can help. I am also getting the Transgo Cummins Shift kit put in saturday, which worked great in my dads cummins. Just want some power now. Thanks!
You should consider getting guages first. True the 12 v was a simpler design with a pump that could be altered into a high volume monster. The 24 valves are a great motor too and unlike the 12 valve every year more aftermarket things are available for it. Have you checked your 99 for the being a 53 block?
the496rocket 09-15-2004, 09:22 PM I am getting three gauges to go in the pillar within a week, I am planning on trans temp, Fuel Pressure, and boost. I called the original owner (i am the second owner) I believe it had a number 53 from the factory, he told me it had a cracked block at 105000, and cummins still warrantied it and it got a brand new engine put it with a stronger reinforcement in the cracked area, so I think it is a different number. It has 123000 on it now, got the truck 3 weeks ago, has 18000 on the engine. I thought that was awsome! Brand new engine! So What do you think?
P.S. Should I skip the boost gauge and get EGT?
I think that is good news on the engine. I also think the EGT is the most important of the guages. If you go with Westach guages you would be able to get all 4 indications in a triple pillar. As they offer a combination EGT & Boost guage in one. The short cut below shows what one looks like.

the496rocket 09-16-2004, 09:16 PM The gauges I am getting are Auto Meter UltraLites, ordered the from jegs today, got the EGT. I most likely will get a boost gauge on the column. Now what about the injectors vs chips? Are bigger injectors easier on the VP44? I am going to want some more power soon, want to know what to get. Thanks
Dodge-5.9 09-17-2004, 01:17 AM well after the gauges get you and edge box, they have a 3 setting box that you have to adjust the seting inside the box, it gose for about $450 or somthing close to that.
i got the 5 setting box fully ajustable from the cab and i love it, on level 5 it adds 120hp and 350ftlbs, i picked mine up for $550
i went from running a 18.6 in the 1/4 to a 16. and its always fun messing with the little rice rockets running around town
If I was in the 496rocket's shoes I would skip the Edge stuff for a MAD ECM first. After getting mine last night I liked it so much I wrote a thread about it.

After that I would go with some Mach 1.5's for better fuel economy and power. Like I mentioned earlier there are several good products for the 24 valve.

so a mad ecm is just an aftermarket computer? and dose it work with the edge box?

Yes.
the496rocket 09-21-2004, 10:08 PM I am leaning toward injectors, they are cheaper, and you can get good power from them, and easier on VP44 from what I hear, and at this point I dont want to stress the vp44 too much, if you read my other fuel pressure post, you will know what I mean.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
Dodge-5.9 09-22-2004, 05:22 AM what type of injectors are you looking at, from wht i have seen they are not that cheap, almost as much or more than a box. no matter what you do, when you mod a motor theres always a risk of somthing failing,
you got a new pump now and a gauge so i dont see anything you have to worrie about, i would say if your looking for a little power just get an EZ edge box, it a 3 setting box. easy to install
the496rocket 09-24-2004, 01:00 PM What about that Superchips Micro tuner? I can already set tire size with our DRBIII where I work, how are they powerwise for the price they offer them for? A local guy here can get me one for about $300.
