I (really the stereo store), have completed the replacement of the stock unit on my 2004.5 Sierra (Bose unit), to a new Kenwood unit plus a lot of options. The new result is a live performance every time I drive. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif So this is what I've done so far...

Kenwood head unit DDX 7015. Flat touch screen that fills the opening like the Escalade have. DVDs and CDs are inserted behind the screen at a touch of a button. It has a very clear screen that can play DVD's, NAV system, SIRIUS and lots of other options. Here is a NAV shot (much clearer in reality)

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/nav_screen.JPG

I also got the steering wheel interface so all the buttons function properly and the OnStar interface so that works as well. The head unit accepts video input from multiple sources, here is video imput from my horse trailer:

Another fun and useful imput is from a camera I mounted on the rear tailgate.

The tough part was drilling into my nice new truck, However the ease that I can hook up my trailer and see how close to an object makes it worth it. The camera turns on automatically when the truck is shifted into reverse. Here is a view on the screen with that camera:

Well, you can't put in a nice head unit without upgrading the amps and speakers can you? So Kenwood's top-of-the-line 4 channel amp is installed for the component speakers (front and rear) and a second stereo amp is installed to power the 10 inch Fosgate subwoofer. You can even monitor on the screen each amp temp, instant current, voltage and fan speed! Here are some pic's:

How do you drag yourself out of the truck to go to work or in the house for that matter?

Nice stuff.

Never thought I'd see a Crutchfield magazine installed on a truck.

VERY nice setup! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif

I'm with Mac, I think you should have a bathroom installed and then you'd never have to leave it.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Nice job. Looks like you will have just as much fun sitting as you will be driving.

I will have to say please don't ruin the install by putting the over sized cody white KENWOOD lettering on your back window to tell everyone what you have in it.

Where's the fridge with the cold ones????? (soda of course!)

Very, very nice!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

You missed one upgrade though, ditch that factory hitch before something bad happens and destroys all that nice stuff! P.S.--how do you like that aluminum adjustable ball hitch setup?

WOW very nice!

I added a camera in back but couldn't bring myself to dsrilling tyhe tailgate. I mounted it on the right side under the bumper. it gives me a side view of the hitch. LCD is in the center console lid.

I have the save aluminum hitch as you although I have not used it yet :)

I have one advantage over your setup BassinRVer, and that is I still have storage space behind 2/3rd's of my rear seat. Your system is awesome as well. If I had kids I would do the headrest monitors too.

As for the Hitch, it works very well. The adjustability is a real plus as I can adjust the tilt of my trailer very easily. Seems strong enough, that is the hitch that 1 week ago a lady ran into and only damaged her car.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I though I might comment on the XM versus Sirius Satellite systems since I have had both in the same truck. Programming wise there are a lot of similarities, however there are more commercials on the Sirius non-music stations. As for the hardware, there is a much more signal drop-out (loss of music) on the Sirius. Given the choice I would stick with XM, Kenwood unfortunately only offers Sirius.

Very very nice setup. I am impressed... I need to do something like that myself. Especially living in a neighborhood with lots of kids on the street playing all the time, they never watch for you so you have to watch out for them.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Hired Gun;

The sub box was custom made at the stereo shop and he built it and had it installed in probably 30 minutes! You loose the cover that opens up when the seat is down, but there is still room for the tire jack which is good.

What speaker is in the box. Here in Kentucky they act like it cant be done, and I see guys on here with things. I like your box better than the plastic boc because there is no rattle. Would that person who built the box have the dimensions, or hey what about a phone number. I would gladly pay to have a couple built and sent to me here.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Hired Gun;

The number to AL & ED's autosound in Ontario, California is (909) 481-8411. Their link is: http://www.al-eds.com/ I do not know if they make and ship them to order. The subwoofer is a 10" Fosgate. The manager's name is Robert. I can measure mine if you would like, but any good custom auto stereo installer should be able to fabricate one.

I was going to install the factory NAV but might go with the Kenwood unit instead. I currently have a back-up camera in my Silverado HD (backed into one of my cars before I installed it). It sends a picture to a larger rearview but I like the full picture much better. I also like hitch cam (where did you purchase that?). I hate doing the jump in and out of the truck thing while hooking up by myself. This would make life soooo much easier. Just as long as the camera doesn't get knocked off.

Do you know what brand the interfaces are for the steering wheel controls and OnStar?

Cracker Jack
11-16-2004, 08:55 PM
The hitch camera I purchased at Fry's but they don't carry this specific product anymore. The camera doesn't have any manufacturer's markings on it. I'm pretty sure they sell other cameras for this purpose though.

and

I'm sorry I do not know what the brand or manufacturer of the interfaces are, it is something Al and Ed's Stereo installed. Since GM's are so common, I would guess most stereo installers are familiar with these products.

Thanks for the reply!

A company called VizuaLogic just came out with a camera that mounts over the license plate. It can be adjusted to get enough angle to point towards the hitch. I might see how that one works.

I just looked at the new crutchfield catalog that came and it shows the same Kenwood unit as having Sirius or XM.Edited by: BukWild

I have XM in my Suburban and Sirius in my 300C. Both are good but I prefer Sirius for some of the channels that they offer.

sirius has a much cleaner sound than xm and a lot better selection of stations as far as rock goes. xm is really lacking in music selection. i had xm for 2 years and now have sirius. I'll never go back to Xm again.
