: LLY or wait sup
New to the site but but brrn doing alot of reading of yalls post. Ill try to br short. Ive owned several D-maxs 01,02, no mods and sold. I now have a 03 3500 crew cab with only filter and Juice box. All have been great trucks with zero problems. Ive orderd a 05 3500 w LLY and have seen mixed reveiws. Should I wait a while longer or have all the issues been addressed enough to know this will be as good a engine as the LB7 in time..... I can be patient.......
Id like to hear more from owners of both that are now happy with tnr LLY after first concerns of not being so happy.
Thie site has been a awsome research tool for this truck.

emerick115 09-14-2004, 09:44 PM It seems to me that most of the trucks in 05 are doing ok. I have an 04.5 LLY and have had nothing but fun with it.
aka108 09-15-2004, 12:43 AM Enjoying our 04.5 LLY. No complaints so far. Will keep it for a few years and trade off before warranty expires. It will remain stock.
JJs DuMax 09-15-2004, 09:03 AM Yeah, what they said! Check out the D/A Silverado poll and you'll see 78% are very happy with their LLY's. No problems here, pulls whatever I put behind it, and fuel economy not bad at 19mpg highway at 70mph. JJ http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Mike_in_Wisc 09-15-2004, 09:17 AM I have the 04.5 LLY also. Brought it home 3-17-04. It is so bone stock, I still have factory air in the tires. (Someone else used that line on here before. I love it) Zero problems. Things I have gone back to dealer for are minor, such as: Air bubbles in door side moldings, A/C not cold enough (GM sent a truckload of parts to be replaced). http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif
LLY DMAX 09-15-2004, 09:33 AM No problems at all with my 04.5 LLY, (built in Feb).
Awesome truck!!!
I think whatever problems are out there are few compared with the hundreds of thousands of LLYs that are out there.
This is a place you will see a big concentration of problems because 99% of owners just drive them and don't have an issue. We are the 1% that either have a problem, or we are just Internet Junkies.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
I tow with mine often up some really long steep grades. it has exceeded my expectations. No problems at all.
I can get 20.5 mpg unloaded if I keep it under 70 mph.
16.5 at 80+
14.4 in town only, stop and go.

geardoc 09-15-2004, 09:22 PM T&M, you need to fix all that other stuff you have before you buy another truck. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
So true too many toys.........

marsguy 09-15-2004, 10:20 PM HI T&M. I have a 2004.5 LLY I love it.. Just like LL DMAX said if ya keep your foot out of it and run 70, I get 20 mpg.I also pull a 26ft Jayco 5Th wheeler. I get about 11.5 mpg at 70..The only things I added was a POST CAT filter mount under the hood (2nd ALT spot) and a 36 Gal tank in the bed. This gives me 62 Gals of fuel to run on..I live in MICHIGAN and cold weather this helps. This forum kicks butt,Lots of good information .bye Marsguy

Mt. Hunter 09-16-2004, 12:18 AM What LLY DMAX said. So far only 11K miles, this '04.5 is the best vehicle I've ever owned. I couldn't be happier with the truck.
I have to admit, prior to owning the 04 LLY I was on this site alot and got a little scared of all the negative news. However, since getting the LLY and Allison (6000 miles) I have been very happy. I pull a 10,000 pound trailer and can't believe how good the truck can pull. Of course I rarely come back here since ownership but do feel obligated to come back atleast once to say how happy I am with it. Not a single problem since getting it. Must admit I have not kept track of the mileage because I am hauling the trailer most of the time (just lazy I guess). The Allison is the best towing tranny I have ever used (it does most the downhill braking for me). GM should put a bigger fuel tank (it looks to me like there is plenty of room on the short bed for alot larger tank).
ldand 09-16-2004, 08:47 AM I took delivery of my truck August 9th and now have 5900 flawless miles on it an LOVE this truck... I get 20-21 mpg if I keep it at 65 and 17-18 mpg at 75. Cannot believe the power this truck has. I had a 03 5.3 prior and hated that thing...
oozamalak 09-16-2004, 09:02 AM I took delivery of my 05, 2500 CC on August 2 currently have 3000 worry free miles and loving it. I have seen as high as 19.5 mpg and as low as 13 mpg. Pulling a 8000# fiver averaged 13.5 mpghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif.
A good friend of mine worked on the dmax platform until late last year. He told not to wait for the 06 model because the are going to be making changes to the dmaxhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif. Some of the changes will be to lower the emmissions. I did not want to wait until late 06 or 07 for GM to get the potential bugs worked out so I chose the 05.
YooperSam 09-16-2004, 11:46 AM Problems and complaints seem to get magnified on the internet. My 04.5 has been problem free and has over 19mpg average since purchase. Gets 22 mpg at 62mph. 7000 miles so far. This area is new to diesel's but every owner I have met likes his truck. I know a service manager in a near by city and they have sold a ton of them. He says they have had absolutely no problems even with modified trucks. Not one. He is very honest with me about which vehicles GM has made to avoid. He doesn't have anything bad to say about any diesel truck made except the small ford engine.
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Appreciate everyones input, would love to here more. Im getting more anxcious for the 05 to arrive.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

RickDLance 09-16-2004, 01:15 PM I have 2 2004.5's and both get horrible mileage above 65 mph. 7-9 mpg pulling under 20,000 pounds GVW is common. MT looks like 75 mph is around 14 or 15 mpg. 55 mph is around 17.5 mpg. Head wind a huge factor both mt and loaded! Over heating still a major issue when pulling. Really bad on 1, minor so far on 2nd. New 4" exhaust on 1 seems to have helped milage, power, and dropped temp a little. Too early to verify, but heading for Tucson Saturday loaded. Great system installed by Warp Speed Performance in Rogers, Arkansas. EGR plate hurt mileage, but also helped temp. problem. Edge box hurt when MT and lightly loaded, but helped when loaded heavy. Have not tried it since exhaust was put on. I wanting to get accurate info on what helped and how much.

Todd,
FWIW - ordered my '05 DMax (my first diesel) almost 3 months ago now and it is due in any day now. I went thru the same doubts that it appears you are going thru - more so sitting here reading this forum and the "problems" it brings to light everyday for 3 months with no truck.
I asked many a questions over the past 12 weeks trying to get a handle on whether I made the right decision and trying to learn as much as possible about maintenance etc. I must say - every one one of my questions (and looking back - some were pretty stupid) were answered by someone. To the point now where I'm pretty confident in my decision.
Once you hang around here enough you'll will learn to sort thru the members and the info they provide. What I mean is some members are having issues with the LLY but they are driving them pretty hard, much harder than I plan to (not that it's a bad thinghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif) So if this truck can take what some members are throwing at it.....it must be pretty darn good! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
It's been said many a times on this forum - "the internet brings people together to solve problems" and this forum brings problems to light.
I'm guessing 6 months from now we'll both be happier than pigs in S**** with our trucks (no offense to the pigs http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif )
There's only one problem I still struggle with ......... they're so darn expensive!!!

Unit453 09-24-2004, 03:21 PM I waited 4 long grueling months for mine to come in from the factory. Little did the dealership know that the LB7 was gone and the LLY was here to stay. Man. date of jan 04 with delivery shortly after. 12,600 miles and the only problems I have were from the Edge juice with attitude system. Loud knocking, surging and a bit of white smoke at temps between 160 and 185. 190 seems to be the majic #. Running stock now, minus the 4" Magnaflow and K&N filter....Tows great with no complaints except 26 galon fuel tank seems a bit small. I could really use a 30 or 33 gal. unit. I average 350 miles to the claim of 26 galons city and 420 highway..Never once have I ever squeezed an ounce more than 22 galons, even with the fuel light on. Good luck.
YooperSam 09-24-2004, 05:57 PM Tried towing last weekend. Got over 13 mpg with a 6000lb travel trailer at 35-60 mph(DCI average 45 mph). Beats my last gasser that got 7-8mpg pulling the same trailer. Massive improvement in handling and acceleration. Really very happy and think MPG will improve. Milegae was no different with/without tow haul mode. Seems strange. Really like the tow haul as far as performance and cruise control works better on hills.
Unit453 09-24-2004, 06:00 PM Sam,
Plan on puttin a chip on it? Exhaust?
YooperSam 09-24-2004, 06:11 PM No, I can honestly see no reason to. If I got the performance bug again, I would buy something tiny with maybe 500 hp and a blonde in the passenger seathttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
sammy 09-25-2004, 09:48 PM picked up LLY in March. Have 12,000 miles and just one trip to the shop for a new computer flash. Recent trip "up north" with 4 adults and luggage averaged 19mpg. Towing mpg is 8-13 depending on the wind and my right foot!
