Hi folks,

A guy here at work has an 8.1/Allison and he's all hopped up to get a Hypertech. Besides monkeying with the engine, he said that he would be able to change "shift points and line pressure."

So I went to the Hypertech site and indeed it does appear to let you adjust shift points (by RPM) and "shift firmness."

I am not thinking of buying one, but was just curious to hear from the tech experts, what is the programmer doing to change shift points and firmness? What is the box telling the Alli to do? And is that going to help or hurt its reliability?

I did a search in this forum about Hypertech and found zero....kinda odd, would have thought someone would have guinea-pigged it by now.

My Alli seems to respond well to added power and learns reasonbly fast, so I can't understand why anyone would really "need" this extra programming. If it were a crappy shifting trans in the first place, well, that would be a different story....

Thanks in advance, MatEdited by: nwpadmax

not too sure on the technical aspect of it, i have one on my '02 tahoe, and have it set for firmer shifts, high octane setting, increased red line, and increased shift rpms for all shifts - it lets you add more rpms between shifts for every shift, and it does work, i played around with mine and got it dialed in and it is pretty fast now, but ive got a few other goodies on it as well, not too mention the wife drives it more than me - LOL

If i remember right, the Ally cannot be changed with the hypertech. Even Hypertaech has the comment that it can change the firmness on 'most' models, not all.

Just found this. Maybe this helps. Shift firmness and shift points are no go!

Tell your freind the hypertech will not control any aspect of the allison trans. It only controls gas versions that do not have the allison. There is no programmer on the market that can.

I was going to say that I didn't think that the 8.1 came with an option for an Allison...

Not sure if you're talking about with the programmer for the 8.1L or with the engine itself. The programmers on the market can't change the Allison's parameters directly, but you certainly can get the Allison 1000 with the vortec 8100 engine. The 2500HD and 3500 trucks with the big block gasser have the same transmission options as the Duramax diesel...Allison 1000 auto or ZF-6 manual. The vortec 8100 option in the 2500 Suburban and Avalanche models comes with a 4L85e transmission if you get an automatic transmission.

I stand corrected.

Apparently no one has cracked the Allison code...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

I think my buddy saw the Hypertech (or something similar) and assumed it did the same thing for the Allison that it can do for the 4L85e (I think that's the version it is now).

Thanks everyone!
