Hey all. Was helping the little brother with his F$&d Ranger. Pulled his intake hose apart to get at some other stuff.
Well holy s#&t Batman. After the filter, the tube going to his throtle body (and inside his throtle body) was coated with dust and grit.
He likes to go and play in the mud. He was at a place this past weekend where sand was present. Couldn't believe the amount of dust and grit in the intake system.
It looked like everthing was sealing properly. Did not take filter itself out. But....

Never have had a problem with K&N, although you need to be careful and not over oil them . . .

What happens if you do over oil them? The dust had to get in there somehow. Still can't believe it.

Oil particles get sucked out and can build up on the MAF and affect the incoming air readings to the computer.

Supposedly GM will not perform warrantee work on the MAF if you have an "oiled" filter . . . .

Not saying K&N are the best, but I like reusable filters.

My little brother had crap right up to and in his trottle body.

Sounds like user error to me.

I have had K&N on all my trucks, cars, 4 wheelers for over 10 years and have never, I repeat never had any problems with dirt getting past them. I take all my trucks well over 150,000 miles and clean the K&N's every 10,000 miles whether they need it or not.

The over oiling is another "user error" that is easily avoided. Buy 2 K&N's for each vehicle. Clean and oil the used one while the new one is in your vehicle. Let the cleaned one hang in a plastic grocery sack until it is needed. Any excess will drip off, this gives the cloth plenty of time to soak up what it needs also.

If you dont want to buy 2, keep your paper filter and put your K&N in the plastic bag for a few days while it soaks up the oils and drips off the excess.

He had the thought that his K&N may have gotten wet....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

But got him to get a Baldwin. May have to question him some more. And see what his filter looks like.

He's almost twenty and has mud and beer on the brain....
