I have the same problem with an Autometer Z-series pyro. It always seems high while just cruising around and it takes forever to cool down compared to my other 2 trucks.

i've taken back my phantom II pyrometer to autometer's home office in sycamore, il ( i work 15 min away) two times. and its been two weeks since i last had it in the truck. according to the technician i met there is a problem w/ the manufacturing of the parts to make my guage, and/or repair it. so autometer is not able to fill orders. i haven't asked if this problem is limited to phantom II or more widespread. but my pyro was doing to same thing that u both are describing when it was new from the box.

i would call autometer and send it back so they can test it, u might have to pay for shipping, but everytime i have taken mine back i've gotten a new harness along w/ a brand new guage in the box. they're customer service has been good to me, the technician is giving me a free dimmer box to help w/ the l.e.d. lighting on my guages.

It should read ambient, or at least close to it, when the truck is cold.

when mine was working when i would turn the key to the on position the guage would automatically reset to zero, but when it was broken it would not, that might help.

I've got the Ultralights and my pyro never reads under 200 no matter how cold.

I would assume that exhaust gas is never below 200* ish, even at start up. Diesel's flash point is around 140-150* so I would assume that the combustion cycle even on the first start up should read in the 200* range. So it sounds like a normal operating EGT guage to me.

My truck has sat for a week and the gauge will still show 200', my gauge is reading 200' before startup with no power or ignition.

Yeah mine sits at about 75 degrees when ignition is off. It sucks.

I have the phantom II's also and found that 330 ohm resistor on the light line works pretty good at getting the brightness in same range as dash dials.
