Hello all, Im new to diesels. I got a 2001 2500. I have two basic questions. I heard diesel gels when below freezing. How can I deal with this situation? I live in upstate NY. Also, if I leave the truck outside overnight in subzero temps, I know I will keep it plugged in, but can I start the engine while is plugged in or do I disconnect first? How long do can I keep it plugged? all night or just a few hours before starting her? Pls all advise on this or any related winter subjects are welcome. Thanks, this is a good friendly site.

Most of your petrolium companies put additives in the diesel fuel during winter months. So you really don't have to worry about that.In the case it ever does gel up,they make an additive you can buy at any parts store. And if that doesn't work, move the hell out of that miserable part of the country(I can say that because I live in north western PA.) Yes you can start your diesel with it plugged in.You can keep it plugged in for a long time. The block heater has its own thermostat. When it get's up to operating temp,it will shut off and turn back on when the temp lowers to a certain temp.Good luck this winter for all of us that live in this godforsaken part of the world need all the luck we can get!!!!
