I was thinking to myself today, "How much money have I put into the truck?" Well I took some time to add it up and I was very surprised how much has gone into it in such a short period of time. I've only had the truck a year and 3 months (purchased new in December of '05) and I have spent over $11,000. Anyhow, its time to spend a little money on protecting my investment.

What alarm do you suggest I buy/install on my truck? I would like it to have remote start, a pager, and any other popular goodies that an alarm offers. This is for my '06 Silverado 2500HD Duramax that you see in my signature. Thanks!

Astro start makes a good remote start alarm combo...you want to make sure you get an alarm that has ignition kill....but honestly the best anti- theft device is common sense....if someone wants your stuff bad enough they will get it...no matter what type of alarm you have....just use your head..keep it locked and don't advertise what you have....and watch where you park...those things are just as good as an alarm imo

When is the last time you heard an alarm going off.....I didnt see anybody running around frantic trying to stop anybody.

Better of making sure your insurance policy is current and paid up IMO

Nobody will run and help, but it definately draws some attention... when you hear an alarm going off, your instinct is to look and see whats up... not out of concern for someone else's property, just out of curiousity.

That said, insurance is your best option. Take lots of pictures, and save reciepts- thats the only wany you're gonna get back anything you put into it.

Python 990. It has a 1 mile range, 2 way remote with display, and all the features of any alarm (shock sensor, door trigger, starter kill, parking light flash, keyless entry, etc.). The remote communicates with the brain in the truck and if someone triggers the alarm, it beeps on the remote. That way, you can look in that direction and get a description of who is tampering with your vehicle, or if someone actually ran into your truck with another vehicle, you won't let them get away. My wife's car was just a victim of hit-and-run at a mall parking lot and let me tell you, if she had a 2-way remote for the alarm, she probably could've got out there to see who hit it. Instead, I just had to pay the body shop a couple hundred dollars to fix it.

If you do get an alarm/remote start, you'll also need a module to control the doorlocks and the passlock II system on the truck.

If you could provide your exact address we could better inform you of which system to install...

Do not buy anything that is made by audiovox, me and my buddy with an h2 have had endless problems.

Pythons are pretty solid i must agree, I am going to swap after i get all my body work and suspension maintenace done.

I have the python with 2way remote and it has worked very well for me. Its nice to know if someone is messing with your truck or not even if it doesnt stop them it may give you a chance to stop them. imo

I also have a Python with 2-way remote and I think it works great.I even have my fast idle accessible through it.

Forgot to mention that I also had the Viper 791VX on my last truck, and the same one on the truck before that, so the alarm is 2.5 years old. Never had any problems with it. That's the one with the 1/4 mile range

The 791 is a great system, all you need to do is keep your remote insight and a shotgun nearby and when some joker things he can break into your truck you can make his day!

Our company trucks have GPS trackers in them, wired in with the alarm. Works pretty good, except most of the professional thieves out there will cut those wires once the truck's around the block from where they got it. I'd suggest look at a cell phone w/gps capabilites or a "kiddie tracker" with the GPS feature. Just make sure that you hide it somewhere, keep power to it at all times, and that it can transmit it's signal from where you've hidden it. Most thieves aren't going to spend too much time looking for several alarm or tracking systems, so you might be able to find the truck after you see it's gone.
Or what about LOJACK?

I do have OnStar. I'm not sure if it still works or not. If it does, is it something you must pay for monthly for it to function?

What about this Astrostart that I keep reading about on here? Is this just a remote start device and/or alarm?

woody240

If your OnStar account is active they can track your car anywhere. They will only give the location to the police not the owner. So I've been told.

The viper is my favorite! you can add proximity sensors and a slue of other things! the remote is the pager and you can set it to not sound the alarm just page you! it's about 500.00 installed then jump on ebay and buy a second transmitter! Z

I had my tried to get stolen twice since I moved back home from getting out of the army. I finally caved in and bought an aftermarket alarm. I went and got the clifford G5, avantgard with the blackjax and remote start. Gotta tell you it is one heck of an alarm. Fully customizable, and if someone does take the car when Im sleeping or if Im in it (carjacking) they have to put in a code if not the truck will start the shutdown sequence as soon as it hits 1200 rpms. You can change it to whatever rpms or seconds that you want. Currently mine wont make it to the end of the block without it shutting off on whoever takes its, and there is no way to start it back up, unless you have the keys and the code. Nothing better than catching the thief yourself and putting a .40 cal USP Compact to his head to get back your truck. Man that was one crazy night.

The thieves know about Onstar, even most dumb ones. By having a secondary system the idea is the thieves won't really look for it, after they compromise the alarm, AND Onstar.
I do like the code and RPM shutoff though, if they can't get around the corner to do it unobserved, more likely to bolt. BTW, a dealer was delivering one of our trucks, couldn't turn off the after-market alarm, and drove it to our office with it going off. Never pulled over, no calls to the office about a possible stolen truck. BE WARNED!!

Can you have an auto-start with a diesel?

jonyb
04-04-2007, 02:52 AM
Sure can. The alarm has a circuit that monitors the wait-to-start light, or just waits 30 seconds before starting.

Don't use the 30 second delay - that's way too long! Wire up the wait to start (glowplug) light.

Ok...here's what you guys suggested so far:

Astrostart
Python 990
Viper 791VX
Compustar

Is there a particular reason that the Astrostart is so popular around here? I see numerous threads come up in a search. Is it because of the auto start or other features?

DINO ONE, what brand of alarm do you have? You mentioned having one, but not the name/brand.

So from the above choices, are they all the same and just personal preference?

Basically what I'm looking for at the minimum is auto start, to retain my keyless entry, when the alarm is tripped, that it pages me or alert me with a device that's with me, and any other nifty security/safety feature that are offered in alarms.

Thanks.

Where's the best place to purchase an Astrostart?

Do they have a website so that I can see the different models, options, features, etc.?

Again, here are the things I'm looking for:

-remote start that needs a delay or recognizes when the wait to start light goes off

-pager to let me know when it is set off

-sensitive so that when someone touches it/bumps it ever so slightly, it'll go off

-I'd like it to warn you if you're standing too close to it and if you don't move away within a certain period of time or number of warnings, it will then set it off

-features that prevent someone from driving away with the vehicle if they do successfully break in

-when armed it will flash the lights, honk the horn, and lock the doors and vice versa

Thanks.

i have a auto page it is great and the service is also great i am on my third brain in this truck but that is because when i put the battery in i pinched the wire to the siren. but all was replace under warranty it even has a secondary battery that is hidden in the dash so even if they cut the lead to the brain it still will continue to go off. and unlike some alarms that will just go off the moment it goes off the ignition is cut and even if that is buy pasted the charging system is killed also so the batteries will have to run the truck i don't think they will get far since i leave my radio turned up and 30 min with my amp on in the shop the batteries are died so i don't think they would last to long running the truck too but i have had some one try to break in at school and the pager went off in my class room which was 1/4 mile away and was in a interior room so it is pretty strong signal

So, what was the concensus?

I have LoJack and OnStar on my 06 K2500, but am still interested in something that'll keep them from driving away with my truck, atleast stop them as they get down the block...

the entering a code thing sounded cool if it works anyways... what was the brand of that system and what's it cost?
