Is there a screw that adjusts fuel pressure or only one that adjusts timing.

Dont have a 6.5, but heavy black smoke is a sign of OVER fueling....which is a big waste...ya looks cool at times but overall a big waste.

Bodysurfer is right, black smoke is a sign of overfueling, but to a certain extent that is desireable. Peak power is produced when there is slightly too much fuel present. It isn't much good for fuel economy, but it does give you some more power.

The adjustment screw in the picture tigman posted is under a sort-of pentagonal-shaped cover on the driver's side of the injection pump. You remove the two screws which hold the cover on and remove the cover (some fuel will drain out into the engine valley - just wait until it is done draining and the soak it up as best you can). Behind the cover you will see the opening towards the back of the pump where the screw will be. You must rotate the engine slowly until the adjustment screw appears in the window.

You can also go through the top of the injection pump (which is easier to get to) to get to the adjustment, but I would recommend going through the side cover because to go through the top you have to remove parts of the governor linkage and if they are installed incorrectly the engine could run away the first time you fire it up.
