A little off-topic, but what gear do you use on a hand-shaker pulling, Johnboy?

Second? Third? I know you wouldn't shift during the pull - but do you pull a quick shift after getting the sled moving, or just slip into it and give it hell?

4th gear low here and i'm almost certian Johnboy uses the same!

Good track 4th low. If it is loose 2nd high. This I hope to run 5th low this season.:D

So you feather the clutch in on 4 lo and have it fully engaged before you start pouring on the power? I guess it pays to have all the torque of a diesel to get it working without having to glaze up the clutch!

Thanks for the input, guys!

Step 1 Hook to sled.
Step 2 Pull slack out of chain.
Step 3 Pick gear. 4th most of time last year.
Step 4 Bring rpms up. Way up. I am usually around 4500rpm to 4800rpm for me. No that is not a typo!

Now here is where it gets tricky.

Step 5 gently start to let out the clutch. The idea here is to build boost and EGTs. You will start to roll forward. You work the throttle to keep your rpms up and you work the clutch trying to build as much ground speed as quickly as possible. How much and how long you slip the clutch depends on how the sled feels and how much power the track can hold.

Disclaimer. Clutch if you do not have a real clutch do not try the above. By real clutch I mean one why more than one disk. I highly reccomend you get a hold of Evan (osuduramax) for one of his billet sintered iron clutchs. I know some is wonder but can I pull with my single disk? Sure can Once!

The up side of the manaul trans for pulling are.
1 You have more gear selections.
2 A real clutch costs half what a built Allison costs.
3 No electornics to go wrong. You are the TCM!:)
4 You can spool a larger turbo than a auto can!:D
5 Chicks dig stick shift pulling trucks!

i give you guys alot of credit for hooking up to those sleds . are you guys always fixing them after putting them through that. after all it seems to me the more you baby your truck the worse it treats you. i dont know maybe thats just my luck . over and over and over. oh well.

I was really considering ordering a manual when I bought my truck last summer. I prefer manuals, but it's impossible to find one on a lot around here. The lower HP rating wasn't a big deal, but I am impatient and I found a truck with everything I wanted, including the color with an allison so I bought it.

Took me 6 months to get mine ordered and delivered from GM.. Now that they discontinued the 6-speed manual, it will probably take you a long time before one of us is willing to give it up.. Sorry man..

thanks guys for responding. my friends thougth i was crazy when i even mentioned manuel. i would have never thought about it until i tryed a 1995 powerstroke man could you create the power it was awesome. then i test drove a cummins 6 speed (06) i like my 6.6 but a 5.9,h.o 6 speed is one nice combo a cummins is a cummins no matter what. 6.6 manuel has got to be awesome. allison is great tranny but completely doing away with stick put that up there with by by straight axle. all i know is my 84, 454 , t400,205, 60,70 ,dually, silverado will always be one of the best trucks i have ever owned. let the technology keep coming .real truck guys will do anything to get there hands on the old stuff again.

I have an 05 duramax with 6 speed manual, It's alright but kinda wish that I had went with the allison. I have 26,754 miles and only towed mabe 2,000 of that. I average 18 mpg emty 14 when I pull my trailer.

why dont you like it trapper? are you just tired of shifting or is it the truck . the allison is by far the best auto i have ever had. and then of course my t-400.

It's a 2500 4x4 ext cab long box. I love the rig just a pain in the rear shifting in town for no more than I tow with it. The only thing I would do different that what I have now would have been the auto, and then only the allison. I had a dodge cummins with auto and went through 2 and started on the third tranny. thats why I went manual on the chev.

from what i gather trapper i dont think you would have a problem selling it.
i got rid of my 06 2500 4 door short bed 5.9 with 6700 miles on it one of the reasons was that junk dodge tranny. all that truck did was shift i tryed to learn to like it i could not take it any more you dont want to know what i lost on that deal. only cummins i would ever own again would be stick or never again. i would even take a 12 vavle. i just dont know if my neighborhood could take it. loud is a understatement.i wonder if dodge is on to something with there new line of trucks looking forward to hearing about that new tranny teamed up with it.

Any chance it's dark blue :D ? You get used to it. I pull a 33' trailer and gross 32K LBS around Denver and I've gotten used to it.

I have put about 6000 on mine since I bought it ... had 54000 on it. I bought it to replace my 04 Ford 5.4L which was not able to pull my 10' flat bed trailer with a clays car (modified golf cart) with out hunting for gears going 65 in OD. Everytime I hit a slight incline it would downshift and the rpm's would shoot to about 3000 ... drove my nuts. I love driving the DMax and am getting great milage, 20 running around and 23 running empty on the freeway.

I just recently purchased a 33' TT and it pulls it just the way I wanted. But, my wife has a problem driving it. Although she had driven a manual for years, it was many years ago. I am now considering selling it and finding one with the Ally. I really hate to give up this truck as it may end up being one of the few that will not have injector problems. I get no smoke at all out of it and it runs great.

dont get rid of it . i think you will regret it. allison is great. you are totally in control with your truck. the allison is the best auto tranny i have ever had. my 01 max had some tranny bugs was always getting it reprogramed or what ever they did . when i would tell them at every stop sign i feel like i was getting rearended. that was only one of the reasons i let my 01 go with 36000 miles on it. i think my 01 was part of the experimentle batch. i was part of get the bugs out program. i wish you good luck.

NO. Don't sell it. If it runs good and has no problems, and you like the way it pulls, then I'd bet you would not be that happy with an automatic. I had to special order my truck just to get the 6-speed. Couldn't be happier, and the wife has no trouble driving it. Give your wife more time behind the wheel to get her used to it. The truck's a keeper, IMHO.

Over the past few days while getting her driving it more, we found out that with the new SB clutch its allot smother if she starts off in 1st gear rather then 2nd. Second will jerk and jump quite a bit if you don't drive it enough to develop a "rhythm".

Let her get the rythym, she will be fine. My brother has driven a manual every day for the last 17 years, and he couldn't hardly drive my truck to stealer for warranty work after I blew my knee out again. He got out of the truck in the drive up at the stealers, just cussing my truck! All the service people were looking.

But Sandell, my 2nd mother drove it from Norfolk, VA to Ohio after my knee surgery. She did just fine driving it after a while. She hadn't driven a handshaker in years!
