Hello, Does anyone know of a Good diesel mechanic in the la/ Valencia area? My 1996 Suburban 2500 started cutting off and dieing today. I have read the great info in the forum but do not know enough to jump in and tear my ignition apart. Thanks for your help!

There are a few simple things I'd check.
Do you have fuel. This includes clean fuel filter, lift pump opperation when you turn the key and when it's running, check the filter bleed for air/fuel pressure.
Is your air filter breathable?
Does the picture of the engine come on when you turn the key or when it stalls? It should come on when you start it.
Where is your PMD/FSD mounted, how old is your IP? classic stalling is the driver, ignition switch(located under the dash on the steering shroud) or low fuel pressue due to OPS or lift pump or clogged lines.

The more you know about what's wrong with it, the less it usually costs to fix it. Let us know how it goes.

I am working on all of the questions from qm. The person I bought the truck from told me it had a duramax engine but it looks nothing like the one in the how to change your fuel filter photo's. Does anyone know what engine was used in a 1996 chevy suburban 2500? I am trying to upload a photo of the engine so someone can id it. The fuel filter housing is in the middle of the engine on the backside near the firewall. It looks like a cartridge filter that is removed frome a permanent housing. any thoughts? Thanks again, Stevehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

durmax didn't come out till 2001 i believe. 1996 GM's had 6.5 turbo diesels. Welcome to the club

Hi! QM Just came in the door and wanted to let you know I drove (crawled)125+ miles in typical Los Angeles traffic and had no problems. Just placed my order for the Heath PMD remote after talking to stewart at Von Diesel. He confirmed your thoughts on the PMD/FSD. Thank You, Tulsa1718 for the tip on Von Diesel, hope to see you at the sled pull. Stevehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ying Yang.gif

It is a good idea to have a backup FSD. If your truck stopped stalling, it might not be the FSD, now, But eventually it will fail. Without a backup, you'll still have to order/buy one. As long as the one on the pump works drive on it and when it fails, install the extension/FSD and go.

It gives me a good feeling to hear a guy solve his own problem with a little help.
