I was installing torklift camper tie downs on my 07 and ended up with black ????? stuff on my hands. Upon further review it seems the frame coating is kind of soft???? and it will come off with very little pressure. Any one else seen this kind of thing? I live in Colorado and they use mag-chloride on the roads. I a carefull to wash the truck often when it is driven, but it only has 4500 miles. thanks

X2 diesel and any solvent will remove it so careful what you get on it, but you can't wash it off with soap and water or the average pressure washer.

It never gets hard, I have found it can be washed off (w/a good pressure washer, or solvent). I know the stuff they put on these roads eats up sheet metal very quickly.

Dealer says its Hot Wax dip to keep frame from rusting. I believe I heard it elsewhere besides the dealer that they use it as a selling point to keep the frame pretty. I'd leave it on for sure. When mine scratches through from jacks or whatever, I try to paint the frame with plastic tool dip spray. My ford frame had a lot of rust, but it did not hang below the body like these truck do. The frame is visable to the world, keep it pretty.

I'm currently restoring my 1996 Impala SS (body-off frame) and I found this stuff made by Waxoly. It's available is spray cans and is described as a hardwax.

Here is a link: http://www.waxoyl.com/en/produkte/hardwax.htm

Still haven't decided to use this stuff or powder coat/paint the frame.

This stuff might be similair to what GM applies to their vehicles amd if it is it may be worth it for those touch-up areas.

i don't know if you have carwell out in your area. i have had my truck spray each year since new (04) and the truck underneath looks like it rolled off of the dealership yesterday! i live where they still use road salt. every one in a while when i park next to another diesel truck (at the store, etc) i'll take a quick glance of their frame. i'll see trucks newer than mine with surface rust, etc starting already!! it is the best 100.00 bucks i spend each year!!

Have you thought of a paint called chasis saver???? Its pretty good stuff, very resistant to chips, bends and flexes, might be worth looking into while you can paint the farme .

I'd really like to somehow do the insides of my doors. Every truck I've had, pampered, still rusts on the very bottom, inside of the doors.

Just a side note and warning on the frame coating....

Last week I was putting a new 07 up on the lift to change the oil and rear end fluids... The coating was so slick that the truck slipped off the lift!

I always pick a truck up a few inches of the floor and rock it to make sure it's safe. Before I could rock the truck it fell off the pads! I repositioned the pads and made damn sure it was correct before raising it again... This time I raised it off the floor one inch and watched it... 15 minutes later the back right support slipped off again with no movement..

This truck is the same as my 05 which I have picked up using this lift many times.. Never any problems.

I cleaned the coating off the frame in the lift point areas and all was well...

Just be careful under there :)

If you ever get a flame to it, it does a good job at burning too. When I worked at a shop installing service bodies, we would plasma the ends of the frames off, but everynow and then we would just torch it off. It won't burn for long or burn your truck up (don't take my word on this ;) ) but it does make a good flame when you put the oxy to it. That and it will burn the crap out of ya if it drips on your hands or arms (or what ever else you may be stupid enough to leave uncovered).

I like that soft coating on the frame. It really does a great job in preventing rust due to chipped paint on the frame rails. However, it is kind of messy if you get it on your hands.

I too like to keep my frame looking decent, but with either the factory or aftermarket running boards, you really can't even see the dropped frame. I don't know why the Ferd boys always comment on this.

On my previous truck, every spring and late fall I would get under the truck, power wash it and touch up any 'chipped' spots with the 'rubberized undercoating'.

Will this stuff still work over the GM Wax factory spray?

What would be better to use and where do I get it?

Wax based ???

Sounds like your fussier than me. want to do mine? :DI really, I always wanted to do that except I figured stuff is going to blow in your eyes and face. What did you wear?

Mine is worn off on the bottom from some light offroading, no big deal as the service manager explained it is only to stop the frames on brand new trucks from showing rust. Most used truck that are painted frames tend to be all flaked off to bare metal anyhow in 5-10 yrs. The only place I would be worried is up in new england where I have actually seen truck frames rust through, but it still took 20yrs.

Power washin ... not too bad because you have the long wand ... get a bit wet ..

The rubberized undercoating - well - would BEST be done on a car lift ...
But yes .. some spay will get on you ...

I do not think the rubberized spay will work over the GM Wax stuff.

I have touched up my frame with semi flat black paint. it had lift marks when I bought it new. 2500HD's in general have way more surface rust than 1/2 tons IMO. It seams like my drive shaft and some other stuff looked like crap from day one.

SAME THING HERE!!! My truck had about 50 miles on it!! I was setting it up to install the plow frame, and I do the same procedure you do, set it, lift a bit, then shake. What makes it worse for me is, mine appeared to be ok.... the front pad kicked out when the truck was about 4 feet in the air!!!!!!!!!!! Fortunately the arm hit the front tire, and "caught" the truck. Talk about heart failure.
Got it settled back to earth, and re-set the pads, picked it 3" off the floor, and let it hang out for a min.... kicked the oposite front pad out. So needless to say, floor jack it was!! I have been working on cars for ten years, and have NEVER had a lift move on me.

I'm going to take a look into this. I tow a boat and jet skis so the truck gets close to salt water. Between that and the New England elements, I'd like to treat it now to keep things looking new.
