Having some problems with my gauges and after-market stereo that I suspect are ground problems. These both were installed by pros - not me.

Where is the best place to run ground wires for the most solid ground?

straight to the battery using the same gauge wire as used for the positive.

actually any painted surface on the truck is the best ground, ie.- kick panel!

Running a wire to the negative side of the battery is not necessary, but will of course work. If you are unsure about the ground used, check it with an ohm meter. If the meter reads zero when connected between what the radio uses for ground and a known ground (as the negative side of the battery), the ground is good.

If the installer used the stock harness to connect the radio, the ground should be good. If they cobbled up the harness, check to see what they are using as ground. If they connected to another wire for ground using a crimp on connector, that could be the problem.

If you are speaking about the truck in your signature, the problem could be your existing vehicle ground. Check the ground cables on your batteries to make sure they are clean of corrosion and tight. Also check the positive terminals, as a loose battery terminal can cause radio problems (voice of experience here!).

I'm using one of the two bolts just inside the driver door fuse panel. It's been working fine for me so far. Just solder an eyelet to your wire, pull the bolt and reattach with the bolt through the eyelet. I think I have 3 separate wires attached there now to that one bolt.

BTW: I've seen some of those "Pro's" you refer to. High school kids working part time and getting $6 an hour.

Yah- I forgot the ""s around "pros". :)

Thanks again for the advice. I am electrically challenged which is why I try not to mess with installing such things as gauges, radios and the like. If it has electrons....I will break it.

Or you could use the factory master ground on the frame driver's side below the battery, behind the front bumper.
