I have a 06 lly recently installed K&N filter only. Two weeks later get check engine light (mass airflow) Go figure... Dealer is nice about it but points to the oiled filter. I did not add any oil to it. Anyone else run into this?

The K&N filter is worthless without the oil...

However too much oil is NOT good either. Just put on a even coat exactly like the directions say.

read more posts on here, most people are staying with the original paper filters.

Your correct, but just letting him know the oil added to the filter is what makes the filter collect dirt.

I had problems on two of my gassers from using K&N filters. I stay away from them now. On a turbo diesel, you are not going to notice much if any benefit by using one of the K&N's or aftermarket systems. The paper element is what most people are using because it is far superior in protection and doesn't really have any impact on flow.

You probably got a "Mass Air Flow Sensor Pass/Fail" code. Two causes:

1. Some excess oil left the filter and got onto the measurement grid wires. Use electronic cleaner to get it off. Do not rub these wires or try to clean them with a brush, cloth or otherwise.

2. '06 LLY programming is very restrictive when it comes to additional air in. Ask the Banks guys...they know and struggled with that in programming their recently introduced Six Gun programmer for this particular engine.

I tried a Cold Air Intake (Volant) and got the same code. I cleaned the MAF, made sure it was oriented correctly into the airstream, checked for air leaks at all connections...did this 3 times. No luck. The code came back every time. So, I called some technical contacts I have at GM to discuss. They advised that without reprogramming the ECM, it would continue to flash the code. No real harm but the code will not go away and the program never learned to handle the additional air. Since I didn't want to mask other issues with a constant CEL showing, I pulled the CAI.

Good Luck...

I have an 06 lly and installed an AFE drop in and also got a mass air flow code, cleaned the sensor with brake cleaner 2 weeks later got the code again and took it to the dealer and got the mass air flow replaced under warranty with the filter in but they blamed it on the filter anyway..Since then I removed the AFE and went back to stock been almost a year and no probs whatsoever, except having the EGR replaced last week at 16,500....Truck runs excellent now just hung bumper 2 bumper with a guy last week that was running EFI live..dont know what program but the thing was smokin like a freight train........I had the predator at 85!!!! I dont think he believed me when i told him that..

the stick will also stop the MAS code. Worked in mine.

BTW, I am back to stock now. I had the AFE drop in as well.

Fill in your signature please. It lets others know what mods you have so diagnosis is easier. Thanks and welcome.

I failed to mention that, at the time, I was bone stock. I also convinced the dealer to "loan" me a MAF to see if mine had failed. It had not. As soon as I pulled the CAI, no more code.

I have also heard that if you install a pre-filter cover that it may help with the code. I have an 06 LLY with a MAC performance system and have ordered the shockwears cover to hopefully cure the code problem.

Also another bad experience i had with the AFE drop in was that a couple of times when i opened the air box lid the filter fell half way out of the hole, i think the end of the filter was too heavy and a little off-roading it fell out, not worth my 40,000 truck so back to stock i went and i think it evens runs better now.

I replaced my stock filter when I bought my truck. I replaced it with the oem AFE replacement with progaurd 7. I haven't any issues with it. I have pulled it out a couple of times and the inside of the air intake is clean dry. It also fits nice and tight, so it doesn't fall out. I do notice a difference between the stock filter and the AFE.

running volant intake no problem 06 lbz 12k on system. be careful of which cai putting on you want one that has a proguard 7 filter. s&b & volant has proguard 7 . volant has oil that is designed for diesels(blue)also hint to pass on if you rub inside of filter and fingers get wet or oily too much oil use paper towel to suck up excess oil before installing.

there is also and alternative filter. the AEM Brute force and workhorse intakes use dryflow filter elements that provide better filtration, increased flow, oil free, and easy to clean. Comming soon is a line of dryflow drop in filters.
