: Good towing tires?

I've almost burned up my stock Bridgestone 245's in 22K miles. They are chunked pretty good from rocks on the dirt roads we travel. We tow a 12-13K toy hauler very regularly, plus my truck is my daily driver. I was looking at a 265/75 or possibly a narrower (235-255) 80 or 85 series. Who makes a long lasting tire that will give me good all around performance in sand, snow, mud, etc., durability and stability when I tow? Plus they need to have a quiet ride on the hwy. I am being told the Toyos are as good as my old faithful Michelins. Any opinions? The truck is stock height, not lifted or "keyed" up.

I run Michelin LTX on all my Trucks, vans that I have owned...now have 75,000 miles on my van and 30,000 miles on my truck.

They are quiet and work well for most applications, work good in snow when new, a little worse when worn...so I run Michelin X-Ice in the winter (excellent in snow & Ice )

FYI...I run BGF DOT Drag Radials on my GN and only get 2,000 miles from them...ultimate traction !!!

the Mich LTX is tough to beat for all-around. they are really smooth, great traction and wear well.

might want to see if they have a BFG Commercial T/A in the larger sizes. I know they have it in a 245-75, just not sure any larger.

possilby the Pirelli STR as well.

I tow a 5th wheel & boat & really like the Revo's 265's. Only drawback I 've found is they like to pick up rocks a lot.

Just ordered Toyo M55's in 255-85-16, E rated . . . a little expensive (about $1100 balanced & put on), but I've heard good things about them . . . hope they're worth it!!! Should have them in a few days . . .

I've got Firestone Transforce AT's on the truck in 265/75 and love them, tires are tougher than nails. I got a nail in it once and damn near had to stand on the reamer to get it through the tire, some seriousely tough belting on that tire. Alot of the guys that tow fifth wheel RV's use them.

Why not go for the BFG Tow Radial T/A :D

There's supposed to be a new Nitto coming out in their grappler line that's designed to run as a street towing tire. Saw it in 8-Lug magazine last month.

BFG rugged trail tires are a good all around tire. Not the best at anything (snow, mud, etc), but they wear like iron. I have a set on my Ford work truck, E load range. The truck is always loaded w/ a big toolbox and 88gal fuel tank (alot for a F150). I have 20k miles on them now and they barely look worn at all. ALot of miles on a rocky muddy jobsite, spinning tires, heavy loads, etc. They do fine in snow and mud if aired down. They trailer well if aired up. Would be my reccomendation if you do heavy towing and still want acceptable performance off road.

I am looking forward to that tire. It will be interesting to see how well it does.

General Grabber AT2s seem to hold up pretty good. The tread pattern is similar to the BFG All Terrain and about $40 per tire cheaper.

Saw the same add, would like to see how the tire would perform.

If you're going to stay with 265's and want raised outined white letters (ROWL) I suggest putting on a set of Firestone transforce AT. These are an excellent towing tire and they last to 50-60k miles depending on how often you rotate. These tires replaced the Steeltex and Ive put more sets of these tires on 1/2 tons through Tonners than I can count. This is my tire for towing and Highway and Partial off-roading.

I'd think the 235E would get better MPG, but your stuck with the 3042 lbs per tire weight rating.
I run Michelin LTX M/S 265E with a 3415 lbs per tire weight rating. Many here mount 265's on the PYO 6.5" rims, but the tire manufacturers recommend a 7-8" rim for this width. I'd suspect a narrower rim would de-rate the weight rating, but I'm no tire expert.
The weight rating needed would depend on how heavy you haul, and how much extra margin you need or want.
