: Duramax will not start
sheppie67 09-11-2004, 09:31 PM I just bought a used 2003 Chevrolet 3500 4X4 with a Duramax, it has 46333 miles on it including the 1500 I put on. Today it would not start . It turns over fine, there is fuel to the filter, drained a very small amount of water out of the fuel filter. But it still will not start . Any ideas???
Should this still be covered under warrenty?

GMC-2002-Dmax 09-11-2004, 09:47 PM Have you changed anything , filters, etc or added anything to the truck.
Could be a fuse blown for the fuel system or the ECM or another component in the truck.
Any aftermarket alarm or remote start ???
I would start there.

roguedriver 09-12-2004, 12:20 AM Check all your fuses, espically the ignition fuses, Just like GMC said. Might be as simple as that.
Ken
You drained water, but did you prime and bleed filter after?

I'd be willing to bet... THAT it is YOUR...
INJECTORS,
and if so, I believe Gm has increased the warranty on these.

Max Owner 09-12-2004, 02:01 PM If it is your injectors, check the oil and see if smells like diesel.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Not sure if that is always a sign only because...
I never had that problem when having my injector failure. But my symptoms were hard starting at first, and then over a short time, (a couple of weeks of continued hard starting), finally, complete inability to start.
Let us know what it was?

Max Owner 09-12-2004, 11:47 PM Glow plugs? Not cycling?
sheppie67 09-13-2004, 09:14 AM I checked the fuses they apprear okay. After bleeding the water I opened the valve and primed, plenty of fuel came out. Nothing has been added as far as after market accessories. I appreciate the advice, guess it will have to be towed to the dealer to see how well that warrenty works.

sheppie67 09-14-2004, 11:13 PM First off I would like to tell everyone I really appreciate all the advice and help. The problem did end up being the fuel filter as some of you suggested. It was so clogged that only 10psi of fuel was coming through compared to the 60psi just to start it. I am betting that the previous owners never changed it at all. I will definitely be investing in a wrench to get my fuel filter off for the next time. Thanks again.
Shawn
socaldieseltech 09-14-2004, 11:22 PM ???????what????? there's vacuum at the fuel filter, not pressure. I don't know the exact #, but I'm thinking about 1500+ psi at the rail to get one to start.
Max Owner 09-15-2004, 10:54 AM Strange. Normally someone suggests a fuel filter right away. Glad it was nothing more serious.
ronadijcks 09-15-2004, 11:05 AM I woulda bet it was the injectors.
Glad I kept my money in my pocket!
And glad it was something 'simple'! At least you are not out the bucks to have them replaced.
sheppie67 10-01-2004, 08:36 PM Well after I got the truck back the first time it ran well for less than 24 hours, then it did the same thing again, luckily both times I was able to get home.
So after a week in the shop, they discovered that there was an excessive amout of oil in the fuel...really excessive; which clogged the injectors. This is what they are telling me anyway and they showed me a sample. So lucky for me the warrenty covered the injectors and their replacement....and I mean lucky, the dealerships bill to Chevrolet is $2650 for 8 injectors, labor and misc. They drained my tank cleared the lines and one more new filter, plus a tow bill for me to pay, Yipee.
Where did the oil come from??? Who really know. For the short time I have had the truck I have fueled up at reputable places. One theory is the previous owner fueled up at a place they seldom sells diesel and when they pumped it into the truck the fuel had seperated, that is their theory. Unless someone else has a better idea.
Just keeping everyone informed.
ronadijcks 10-01-2004, 10:29 PM Now you are making me feel bad! I shoulda bet money!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif
Glad they took care of it for you.

acehi 10-02-2004, 06:41 AM I have been having a similar problem with my 01. It started back in April, I woke up one morning and hit my remote start and it never beeped at me to let me know my truck was running. So, I opened the door and all i heard was my starter cranking over. I ran out to the truck and inserted the key and shut it off. I tried several times to start it but no luck. For some reason, I pumped the primer on the fuel filter and a couple more tries, it started. It didn't do it again until Early august, so i primed it again and it started. Now, i keep my filter changed about every 5000 miles it each time it looks fairly clean. But in the last 2 months it has done it 3 times. Getting more and more frequent. I am concerned about the injectors. I am leaving Alaska at the end of November and driving through Canada down to California. I called and made an appt. for my truck to have it checked out on the 18th of October. I just changed my oil last week and I could not smell any fuel in it. Could it still be the injectors? What other concerns should I think about before taking this long trip?
Thanks, Jeff
letsgo 10-02-2004, 10:05 AM The fuel injector bill (no labour included) to the dealer should have been 8X $580.00us = $5640.00us so why the differance????
good luck
parker2510 10-02-2004, 11:18 AM I think they charge what ever they want to for injectors....when I had mine done about 4 months ago.....the price was $385 per injector....Go figure http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley24.gif

Makes me wonder, we paid the most money for our trucks. Did we get the best truck?
I know people 'love' their trucks, but when are the trucks gonna "Show the Love". Ya know?
