: Help, my diesel makes a whistling noise.
Chevy350 03-22-2007, 01:20 AM haha.
But seriously, there is turbo noise I have never noticed before. Almost sounds like air sucking through a small orifice which is why it concerned me because I thought maybe a loose air boot or something. It happens when i just barely touch the throttle, just enough ot pick it up about 200rpm off idle.
its most likely normal. but im one of those paranoid about every odd noise guys. Any input?
txguppy 03-22-2007, 01:29 AM You need to fill-out your signature so we'll know what you have. Guessing, I'd say it's normal or maybe a loose air tube fitting somewhere.
Chevy350 03-22-2007, 01:56 AM Me and computers dont get along well. But I think I got it now.
Anyways, Im guessing its normal. Otherwise I'd almost be sure a sound like that was air being sucked in or escaping. Any problem areas to check or just the entire air intake system in general?
MadMaxx 03-22-2007, 07:11 PM vvt?
mrfixit 03-22-2007, 11:05 PM Does it only do it when the truck is cold? If so could be VVT maybe?
Chevy350 03-23-2007, 12:26 AM The truck was warm when I was playing around with it trying to figure it out. I wont be home until April 16th and I dont really have the opportunioty or tools or garage to do anything here at work. I'll check all the air boots and stuff when i get home and if its not that i guess its normal. It doesnt sound bad, just one of those noises that makes you wonder what it is.

After a long tow or after some heavy driving, my turbo appears to be a little more noticeable. It might just be me. Do you have a loss in performance or mileage?
Chevy350 03-23-2007, 01:12 AM No, havent noticed any major changes in mileage or performance. But Ive been at work since the beginning of may and ill be here until april 16th. All the driving I do up here is usually just to the gym and back and its about 6 blocks away. Once the snow melts ill walk instead of firing up the truck for a 5 minute drive.
When its spooled up I dont notice any irregular noise. I had the windows down and hauled on it a bit and I also spooled it up a bit in park to see if it made a difference. The only time I hear it is just when the rpm raises about 200 off idle.
mrfixit 03-23-2007, 08:00 AM hmmmmmmmm :confuzeld
Just Tool'n 03-23-2007, 08:58 PM I have notice mine this week.
Drove it for over 1200 miles in 4 days doing sales meetings, need to show a ton of tools this months.
Been driving Rentals since Dec 06, so I would not rack up 1000 plus miles per week on my personal truck.
Anyway a whistle when going under boost.
Maybe my EGR blocker plate or gasket is loosening up.
Thats the 1st place I am going to inspect.
Anyone have this happen to them?
OneTALLGMC96 03-23-2007, 09:13 PM Sometime around this December, mine all of the sudden had a really loud turbo(s) wistle too...weird;)
Seriously though, could it be an intercooler boot? I had a small slash in a boot and it made a wind/wistling noise. However, the power difference is noticable with this?.
thejdman04 03-24-2007, 05:56 PM I agree, check your intercooler boots. simple fairly quick check.
tracetrimble 03-28-2007, 11:41 PM I think we have the same problem... http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135391&highlight=noise+throttle
Chevy350 03-29-2007, 01:43 AM Ya. I've tried to recreate it a few times since then. I'm pretty sure it is just normal turbo noise. I can reason out in my head how it would make that noise if it goes from idle with basically zero boost and the fins open up and all of a sudden start making boost. It only happens at like 1/32nd throttle. And as soon as you pass that or start spooling up more it doesnt do it.
I'm going to check the boots anyways though. Is holding it spooled up a bit to create pressure and checking the boots a good idea?
