Since I am waiting for my 19.5's I want to change out to 235/85 . Does anyone have a pic with a dually with these?

Will they rub ?

I have 235's on my 03. I don't think the offset has been changed cause mine came with the stupid looking 215's too.

Mine touch when loaded with the rv, about 3600lbs of bed weight. Have been coast to coast with no tire problems at all. This is my second set of 235's at 96k miles.

There are guys on here who will tell you their tires don't touch, but with the abuse I've given these tires, I'm not concerned about the sidewalls touching.

Any tires with rim guards like the goodyear wrangler silent armor seem to touch even with max psi and unloaded.

Keep in mind DOT requires a 1" minimum between dual tires.

well if one inch is require on the bottom ,GM daullys with oem equip tires are in trouble , less than an inch without a load on them

I have seen a couple of sets of rear 235/85/16s that were on factory steel wheels blown out. They rubbed together and blew out on that part of the sidewall. Aluminum wheels fit fine.

maybe it's because the newer trucks went to 6.5 inch rims (didn't they?) My 97 has 6 inch wide rims, I went from stock 225/75 up to 235/85, looks like it should instead of like a lowrider. I have no rub issues at all, not even close. I put 3 tons of mix on this winter, ended up carrying it around for a week and a half. I should have had 80 in the rear tires but I think they were closer to 72 for whatever reason. That was the heaviest load yet and they were almost touching. I regularly put 3000 lbs on it and the tires don't even squat. I just have cheapo Cooper off brands right now, but they are ten ply. I can't believe how many people say their 235/85s rub. I also can't believe people will drive with the duals rubbing. That's just asking for trouble. Stupid if you ask me. If mine were to start rubbing I would get off the road and correct the problem immediately before a tire failed and I lost control and killed somebody. But that's just me.

When installing 235/85's on a Dually, you need to be sure you are buying load range E tires. I have had everything from BFG to Coopers on my differant trucks and I prefer BFG Commercial T/As for a 1 ton. BFG has a Traction version if you need an aggresive tread for off road. I personally have the 235 Commercial Traction T/A's on my truck, and I have been very pleased so far. 20K miles and they look close to new.(Fiance keeps rubbing curbs with the passenger rear)

Good luck

How many miles did you get out of the veryous tires you have used?
This is a dually question because I am trying to compare what to expect from stock rim type tires to the 19.5, to see if they will be werth the 3K investment.

I changed to the 235/85R16 tires for the same reason that you are. Eventually I want Alcoa 19.5" wheels outside and steel inside with 245/70R19.5" tires.

I have Firestone Transforce HT's (LR "E") on all 6 positions. These are 80# tires and I run 65# when empty and put 80# in when I have the trailer her back. I have exactly 7/16", at the bottom, spacing in between the closest point of the sidewalls at the lower pressure. I have 15/32" spacing in between the sidewalls at 80#. I am only putting just under 1000# on the hitch at this time, with a 6800# trailer. I don't hear or see any signs of scrubbing. I don't feel any heat build up either and I have checked it with an infra-red Non-contact thermometer. The inside and outside temps have always been lower or the same than the fronts.

I still considered installing longer studs with a 1/2" spacer, when I hook onto a heavier 5th wheel trailer or if I put a Truck Camper in the box.

You can a just see some daylight in between the tires at the rear.

If you are watching your fuel mileage, remember to figure in the difference for the slower odometer reading. I usually multiply my odometer reading by 1.04 to come up with the mileage that I have on my GPS.

The better half and several others say the the 235's look better than the 215's that were on there, as they fill the openings just a touch more.

Here are a couple of pictures of 235/85R16 BFG A/T's on stock Dually rims. Took these pics Sunday. 65# in each back tire. I am going to run spaces because the 5er weighs 15K when loaded.

Check here for pictures I just posted:

Has anyone tried the Kuhmo KL78 AT's in 235/85-16 LR-E on a dually? I am down to ordering tires this week, and would like to step up to them. Specs say that they are 9.2" wide compared to their 215/85 which is 8.5 sec width.

Saleen,

I was going to get those tires (Kuhmos), until my friend bought me the 6 BFG AT's!

What a friend! Not sure if the 235 Kuhmo's will work as they measure 9.2 v.s the 8.5 sec width I have on my Kuhmo Road Venture HT's now.

Just add a set of Fred's spacers. I have a set I am installing this weekend. My BFG's are to close together for towing.

I do a lot of work for my friend, but it was really nice that she did it. My wife was involved with the whole deal. They kept me in the dark and suprised me.

I have Remington 235s on mine and no touch empty. They look to have about 3/8 inch clearance empty. I haven't tested with a load but that is soon. I will drop a pallet of quikrete on just to check before I load my camper. I have some 1/4 inch spacers that I will add if the 3800 lbs of quikrete makes them touch. The camper weighs around 4500 loaded and I DO NOT want any rubbing.

I just bought some Big O tires with the 235/85/16 load range E. It doesn't look like they are going to rub and the tire guy assured me that they won't. I told him I pull heavy a majority of the time and also pull my 5'ver (small 27 ft)...they look better than the stockers. I'll post pics as soon as I get my camera back...later this afternoon...:D

Well, I broke down and bought the BFG A/T=KO's and they are almost as open in between than my 215 Khumo HT's I would say I lost less that 1/4" clearance between the tires and I still have about 5/8" clearance between them and with my trailer on they still had around 1/2" clearance, can't believe I was so scared about them rubbing!

I had 235/85 16's on both my 01,and current 04. the bridgestone revo's seem to have less rubbing. but if your loaded up real good they all will rub. that being said I have never had a problem with the 235's.

Now that is what we need photos of along with knowing how much weight is sitting on the rear axle.

I just had my truck loaded today it doesnt seem to make much of a difference. I still can fit two fingers between the rear tires. Probably an inch or so. Thats what was on the truck when I bought it used.

I couldn't find the Federal DOT reg that says tires must be one inch apart on dual wheels. Goodyear quotes a federal regulation about when a tire/rim combination should be placed "out of service" and that would be when "the tire touches any part of the body or frame or it's mate".
Each state appears to have it's own regs for trucks, busses and cars, but none are so exact or even mention minimum tire spacing.
Evidently it must be a Federal Dot regulation for manufacturers to be able to sell their product, in which case, stock tires and rims are acceptable and if the tires don't touch when under load, you're good.

But, I only spent 4 hours trying to find the DOT regulation on (non-commercial) dually applications. Maybe the guy that quoted the 1 inch spacing could cite his reference? Or are we just going to be criminals? :o: ....again.:D

I looked in the Pennsylvania DOt regs. and couldnt find anything on rear dually tire spacing. I guess Im a felon then because I dont have quite an inch between mine. Come and arrest me.
