: Gauges, what to get
CNY6.5TD 03-20-2007, 10:48 PM Im wanting to do pillar guages for my 93. I obviously want to do a boost and pyro, but being a standard i dont need trans temp. SO have any of you guys out there found any use for a third guage without an auto tranny? I was thinking maybe fuel pressure. Somone had also mentioned to me doing 2 boost guages. I guess i could just go with the 2 guages and be done with it, but i figured i would see if anyone has any good ideas or experience with using a third guage. Also, im looking at buying the stuff from a website called "glow shift direct". Anyone ever heard of them or purchased from them? Thanks in advance for any replys.
Rodeo_Joe 03-20-2007, 10:51 PM i'd run a fuel pressure too cause you wanna make sure you don't run without enough PSI
CanadianDiesel 03-20-2007, 11:20 PM fuel pressure would be a good one to have, that way you know when your fuel is gelling up to during the winter months.
differental temperature would also be a plus if your pulling everday with it.
a clock is always nice to have
and propane gauge? if you ever run propane?
one thing i would like to see is a weight gauge for the rear of the truck. if you got air bags it would help alot.
CNY6.5TD 03-21-2007, 07:49 AM thanks for the input guys, i dont tow everyday with it. The hardest regular work the truck sees is plowing snow in the winter, which is unfortunately coming to an end here in NY. So while the fuel pressure guage would be nice, i was looking at the one that matches the other guages i already picked out and it has an index of 100psi. So what kind of fuel pressure do these trucks run, i couldnt see having a guage that doesnt really read on a scale that would be helpful. Also, anyone every deal with dual boost or dual pyro setups?
Matt C 03-21-2007, 08:06 AM The stock lift pump puts out less then 10 psi IIRC. Mabey its a little over. I'd try to find a smaller scaled gauge so its more acurate with small numbers.

I was kind of thinkin that was about ballpark and the fuel pressure was minimal.
Dave12 03-21-2007, 12:29 PM CNY6.5TD,
Fill out your signature so we know exactly what you've got, it makes a difference when guys are trying to recommend things.
If you have an emmissions engine or are still running a vacuum pump for your wastegate on a non-emmissions engine, how about a vacuum gauge? Lots of problems are related to a failing vacuum pump or insufficient vac pressure.
Rodeo Joe....LOVE that Avatar!!

autoxsteve 03-21-2007, 03:35 PM another choice is an ETI meter.... but you could place that somewhere else like in glovebox or engine bay...

I been meaning to get to that, and you are right

Whats an ETI meter? not to sound simple but im still fairly new to some of this.
lifer 03-21-2007, 11:41 PM My third is going to be a digital water temp gauge from Summit programmed to flash when temp hits 208F. I cooked my engine while chatting away with my son and not watching the gauges. May he'll notice the flashing 208 beside my head next time!

ETI= Elapsed Time Indicator
Used so you know how many hours you have put on engine...
CNY6.5TD 03-22-2007, 07:27 PM oooh, an hour meter.... i guess maybe i am simple. Oh well, i decided to go with just boost and pyro, got both gauges plus the pillar coming for 155$ from glowshift direct.com. Ill have to post again when i get the stuff and make a judgment on the quality since no one seemed to say they had heard of/dealt with that company. thanks for all the input guys
Dieseldad97 03-22-2007, 08:01 PM Hey CNY.....sounds like a great deal on the package. Please post your results when you get the stuff going. I may be looking at the same package for my truck.
King Nuzz 03-23-2007, 11:00 AM Anyone know of an aftermarket tachometer that works in the guage pod? My '93 doesn't have tach.
chrisk1500 03-23-2007, 11:12 AM I'm sure autometer would have something....then you have to figure out how to get the signal from the alternator to work with it....not sure if it is a direct hook up like it would be if you had a coil on a gasser...

Get a whole cluster with a tach out of the boneyard, the reference wire for the tach is already active and if you swap in a cluster with a tach, the tach will work. Thats what was done with my truck, otherwise i believe the reference for the tach is on the IP, but i cannot be certain. And i also THINK a cluster out of a gasser may work, I believe the only difference is the "unleaded fuel only" marking by the gas guage.

Im real happy with the product so far, did the install last night and everything seems to be working fine. I had 2 qualms. The first was the instructions didnt say much of how to use the color change button, you can put it in a mode where it shifts through the different colors and i had to dink around a bit to figure out how to get it in and out of that "shuffle" mode. The second is that tinted lense guages i bought, the standard back lighting ( headlights/ dashlights off) isnt bright enough for me to really read the guages, so i may just wire the brighter backlighting on its own switch instead of with the dashlights. The windows in my truck are tinted pretty dark and its not very bright inside my truck even on the sunniest of days. The quality seemed ok, the guages didnt seem like they were overly flimsy, So i guess the quality test is up to time now. All in all i thought it was a pretty good buy.
