Yesterday I had some BFG 285 M/T's put on my truck (04' GMC C/C). Now the first time I went to the tire place they told me they wouldn't install them due to the significant rubbing. I went out to the shop and looked at what they meant. I would have had to trim (or let the tires do it on their own) about a 1-2" radius and approx. 3-4" long crescent out of the lower front faschia. Didn't really feel like this. Went home, took the bumper off (6 bolts, piece of cake). Went back and had them install the tires.

Did a really simple mod to space the bumper forward. Before mounting, I drilled holes in the middle brackets that hold the bumper on. These holes were drilled closer to the front of the vehicle than the current ones. If I had more time I would have gotten a bigger drill bit and even slotted the hole out, but got lucky and the bolts lined up the first time!

Lined these holes up first, tightened them up and went to the next step.

Next I moved the side braces from the rear of the bracket to the front and put 6 washers in between the brace and bumper to space it out. See here.

That was it! I left out the other two bolts. I may end up fabricating a small bracket. But honestly I feel that the bumper isn't going to do anything in a crash, the things weighs less than 40lbs easily. I was still able to stand on the front of the bumper without any problem, figured that'd be all the abuse it'll get. I easily clear my 285 mt's and the whole job took maybe 1hr.

Here's another pic from the top of the bolt I left out.

In this one you can also see the old mount hole to the right.

That's that.... Oh yeah, here's what it looked like all said and done, pretty clean I think? Actually I think the bumper lines up better than stock!

looks good. The bumper looks kind of low or is that just an illusion, is it the same hight than before?
Would be nice if that plastic piece in between would be white (or blue at my truck). What do you think?

Just an illusion... can't be lower, the mounts are still the same height, didn't change anything on that. If it is lower, it's from me jumping on the front bumper http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Yeah, it would look better if it was white or chrome. Have you seen the all blue front end on here? Look at the "see what your ride looks like" post. It's quite nice!
Here's the front end as is...

Thanks!

Nice lamps in front, how much are these? Yes I have seen the all blue GMC and like it a lot! Is your place very cold or why did you cover that grille?

From front view it looks even more like a big gap (because the black plastic part cannot be seen) - hart to tell from a picture, I'll bet in reality looks different.

covered the grille for the look. It's actually very small holes in the grille... You can see them in person. Ideally it'd be a denali grille, but not forking out for that! Lights were 200$ (including markers) Diehl auto parts. www.fenderworld.com (http://www.fenderworld.com) That's the address on the receipt.

Did you do any cranking to your torsion bars? Do you believe that would have prevented you from having to move the bumper?

If you have not cranked the bars have you tried turning your wheels almost to full turn and go up a driveway and over the gutters in the road. When I did this I still rubbed just a little and I had to crank just a little bit more on my '02.

I have actually turned full one way, and had it rub once. It's not bad though. I'm considering cranking the tbars a little, but worry about the ride. I have no issues yet, we'll see if winter/ice buildup causes me any issues, then I'll crank em' up. (on edit) I have not cranked torsion bars at all, can't say if that would have helped or not. I think it would rub on the bumper without spacing forward...

Well nicely done anyway. As far as snow and ice build up, the only place that should build up is on the back part of the fender behind the tire and not in front at the bumper. So this should not be an issue.
Can you take the black trim piece off between the bumper and the grill. Maybe you can get that painted like you suggested and maybe the grill trim piece also. That would look good blending it all in.

I like it!! I looked up the DIY bumper move and it looked like a lot of overkill for me. I agree that these bumpers aren't going to do anything in a crash. I have 285's on my '01 Chevy and don't have any rubbing problems. But I came across a set of chrome H2s with tires. The guy only wants to sell them as a set, so I've been thinking about moving the bumper. I just may give this a try to fit 315s.
