: Loud noise and excessive black smoke

I am going to take my truck in next week and would like some help, so that I may help the dealer diagnose my trucks problem. Over the last few months it has intermittently had some engine problems. This problem happens generally at freeway speeds and lasts anywhere from 2 to about 6 seconds. The engine will all of a sudden become excessively loud, like 5 times louder than it usually is. It also sounds like it fires extremely rapidly. At this time there is also a loss of power, what I mean is hesitation and cutting out. At the same time there is ALOT of black smoke pouring out the exhaust. Not that this is bad but when it is not intended I believe its a problem. This has happened to my fiance in the truck about 6 different times and I personally experienced it for the first time last night. The truck was taken to the dealer once. They say that they hooked it up to the machine found nothing wrong and were unable to duplicate it. Also when it does this there are no check engine lights on and none of the gauges move from there normal range. After it happens the truck continues to run fine and no further problems are experienced. Thanks to all in advance.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif

NorCal 2500HD was a little faster than me.

See if the technician can connect a Data Collector - NOT a Tech 2 - to your pickup. If you can get your pickup to act up, I have just the person for you to talk to. I could not gather any problem data on my pickup. It has been a good boy for the last 1400 miles. If someone can get data from their pickup, this problem could PROBABLY get solved for a lot of DMax owners.

Thank You
