I'm thinking of getting a new truck, now I have a 97 Powerstroke, anyhow I have always been a Chev fan and only bought the truck for the engine. My questions are how much power can you add without toasting a transmission or engine. What kinds of mods do you add to the Duramax ?I guess I'm pretty ignorant to the Duramax, Iv'e been really involved in modding the Powerstroke for the last couple years.I put 190,000 miles on my 94 chev with the 6.5l diesel and was glad to see the slug go, loved the truck and hated the engine. Anyhow if you guys could give me any ideas i would be greatful.

Welcomehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

90hp added or so seems to be about all you can add and be 100% certian you will be fine with not harming the ally. Past that and you may need trany upgrades. Trany upgrades are about the biggest $ part of modding a dmax right now.

Guys are running 6 and 700 hp and not hurting the motor. The actual limits and such havent really been found on whats reliable and whats not. Alot of the guys blowing stuff up runing very high numbers are running everything they can strap under the hood like LP, a big program, WMI, nitrous......who knows what did the motor in???

Oh....if your still up in the air I may wait a few to see how the new trucks with the VVT come about.....may be best from a perf standpoint to go with an older(up to early 04) lb7, unless perf isnt your biggest thought?

I have heard the early trucks have internal injec lines that break is this true or B.S. which years are the best for modding? How much hp can a person see with stacking programming , how much would this cost? I know i'm full of questions please excuse my ignorance.

Early injectors did go south but IMO moding has no bearing on them going to crap. The general just relased a new 200k waranty for the affected ones. all the lb7's respond to modding the same. Get an 03 or 04 chevy since they look the best(that outa get some replyshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif)

I would venture to say 500rwhp or theres about isnt outa the q on #2 no drugs and stock injectors with the right chip by itself

I put a regular 90hp edge on my truck and put down 340hp for 500$ or so IIRC. So I'm guessing your selling the ford now huhhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif lol Edited by: ratlover

I have around $2000 in drugs and $2200 in the tranny . thats it . you wont belive how it runs , mine is 04 lb7

Guys are running 6 and 700 hp and not hurting the motor.

This is only a opinion as the jury is still out as to the effect it has on the engines internals given their short time on market. It would be foolish indeed to beleive that greatly added boost and doubling the power or more would not shorten life of engine some because it is not immune to it though some would claim it is. A lot higher bearing and ring pressures will take there toll long term. An engine that is designed to make 600 or 700HP long term will have much greater bearing diameters and areas and bigger bores for reduced cylinder and ring pressures and longer life. (there is a reason that OTR rigs have engines of 800 cu inches and more to make their power) The "problem with a diesel to is that given its inherent noise, you make not hear early warning signs until it is to late. Moderation is wise if you plan long term performance and reliabilty.

I didn't mean to start a war, I am just trying to educate myself a little before i make up my mind. One thing is for sure there's no way i could leave well enough alone, it would have to be modded. My whole family is Chev fans including me, my uncle just bought a new 04 Duramax, it drives me nuts seeing it set there stock knowing the potiential under the hood.I bought the Ford 2 years ago and could not afford a Duramax, Iv'e had fun with it but really miss the ride of the IFS and the bowtie up front.

Over the road trucks use 780 to 893 cubes to get 1450 to 1850 lbs. torque at 425 to 550 hp at 1500 or so r's. It's all torque on big trucks, as they don't shift at redline (2200/2330rpm). 500 hp at 893 cid (Cat 3406) is a walk in the park, hence the 700/ 900k mile motors before inframe. All together different than the games we play. 600+ hp bursts, tho very exciting, won't have much affect on rings (pressure fed keystone), brngs and guides. The prob will be peek pressures on the head gasket and rods. A few failures have occured, but numbers were out of this world, and they didn't seem to make it to the "fine tune" stage where the mixes were peeked but safe and numbers repeatable...T

I have an 04 GMC LB7 with a Predator programmer that I got for $340. I am more than impressed with it. I have never had EDGE so I can't speak for it. I http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Heart.gif My LB7!! I believe that you will be happy with it. I have never drove an LLY so I can't speak for it. My advise is once you get one READ, READ and READ to figure out what kind of performance to do to it. GOOD LUCK!!
