: Water pump leak
irelandd 03-19-2007, 08:30 AM I know I will get a hard time about this but I need to put in some stop leak in due to a leak somewhere by my waterpump. I don't have time right now to pull the truck apart again (just installed my engine 1k miles ago).
For those wondering, it's not the quick disconnect. I repaired that when I replaced the engine.
If I dump the stop leak in the resevoir tank will it circulate or do I need to pull the top radiator hose and dump it in there?
Also, anyone have experience with the different kinds of stop leak and +- of them?
Thanks.
rigmover06 03-19-2007, 10:02 AM In my experience that stuff has caused more problems than it's fixed.Plugging up cooling lines in the rad and stuff.
But hey maybe on Diesels it's different.
Just my .02 worth.:D
CanadianRigger 03-19-2007, 10:55 AM Try these. How bad is the leak though??

The leak is bad enough to cause my low coolant lite to come on this morning on my way to work (30 minutes).
irelandd 03-19-2007, 01:00 PM Forgot to ask again. Where is a good place to put the coolant tablets? Radiator top hose or coolant resevoir? Sure would be nice to have a radiator cap on these:( .
rigmover06 03-19-2007, 01:41 PM You started something. I went out this morning to start my truck and saw a green lake under my truck.
Guess what went bye bye. You guessed it. MY WATER PUMP!!!
2 hours later I got it off and heading for Canadian Tire for a new one.
90.00 with no core charge. These are new not remans so I guess that'll be alright.GDPIA:mad:

I would not recommend putting it in the reservoir unless it is empty. If it is empty mix it with water and pour it in. It should gurgle down into the main system. At least it does on my van.
I've used several of these in an effort to avoid replacing a head gasket. Sometimes they help temporarily but none ever fully fixed the problem permanently. None ever caused any problems either. Just make sure you follow the directions. Some cannot be used with antifreeze.
I'm not sure any of them claim they will fix a leaky water pump - that's a tall order.
irelandd 03-20-2007, 08:15 AM Never mind.
I found the leak last night. The gasket between the water pump plate and the block is leaking. Looks like I will be replacing it tonight and using RTV instead of the gasket that came with my engine long block.
Can someone give me an example of an anaerobic sealer? The Haynes manual defines this as something that cures without the presence of air (not RTV). Can I just use Napa gasket sealer?
Thanks
nickg 03-20-2007, 08:56 AM Try snugging up the bolts first, could be that they are loose, especially since you just installed it
...or is it leaking on the back of the pump where the plate is, if so all bets are off
the best sealant is called "the right stuff" made by permatex or the GM sealant (GMS) from the dealer

The bolts were loose but tightening them had no effect on the leak. I suspect the gasket is too far gone at this point. It's leaking between the metal plate behind the water pump and the timing cover.

I debated about using the gasket or anarobic sealer a few weeks ago when I changed up to the HO pump, went with the sealer, I've had great success with it in the past on different applications.
I tend to use Loctite products, what you would be looking for is Gasket Eliminator 518. The Permatex = is Gasket Maker #51813.

"Loctite 518 Gasket Eliminator" Anerobic sealer....available at NAPA.

Did you use this around the whole water pump plate or just where the manual says around the water ports?
Tracy 03-20-2007, 11:59 PM I placed the sealer were the factory put it which was around the entire timing chain housing flange and the water passages, that way I knew were to put the sealer, putting it on the plate a bit of a guess were the sealer goes, it needs to seal the oil in the timing chain housing. Then just slide on the plate and waterpump.
Not sure why the manual would say just around the water ports, sounds like you might have a Haynes manual.

And by the way you are correct. I have the haynes manual. They recomend using RTV on the timing cover flange for some reason. I'll use your suggestion instead since it makes more sense.
irelandd 03-21-2007, 04:04 PM Arggh.!!! Napa, like the other stores has the anaerobic sealer but not the activation spray listed on the tube. I am leaning towards RTV at this point. Both the mechanic and Napa say noone uses the anerobic stuff anymore.
Tracy 03-21-2007, 05:04 PM Activator is required when gap is thick .015 to .050 but with this application no actvator is required but the surfaces need to cleaned well with alchol or accetone. I have only used RTV without a gasket on low pressure or low critical applications so I can't offer any advice.
The RTV sealer is better for thicker gaps like valve covers, rearend pans, so on were the anarobic sealer is better for thinner applications.
Primer 03-21-2007, 07:25 PM I've always used Loctite 518 on waterpumps(actually on pretty much anything haha) and have not had a single leak. The only problem I've had is when I go to remove the waterpump plate at a later date. Damn near takes a crowbar sometimes ):h
irelandd 03-22-2007, 07:56 AM Got lucky last night. (OK not that kind of lucky).
A friend of mine had some left over from a different project. I assembled the water pump last night with anaerobic sealer and activator.
