2004 2500HD EC, D/A. Anyone else having this type of problem with the starter. It's almost acts like the siloind is not kicking the starter on the fly wheel. Make a lound grinding sound. Back the key off and try it again and it will start right up. Haven't been able to narrow it down to when it happens the most. It does it hot, cold, rainy...ect. Took it in for a check and they said everything checks out "OK". It's one of those problems that they have to see fail before they can do anything about. Just looking for ideas or anyone else having similar problems.

When I bought my '01 used with 35000 miles on it, mine "kicked out" when my wife was starting it. Same scenario , turn the key and it started right up. When I took it in to the dealer , they replaced the starter with no questions asked.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
It has happened maybe 2 -3 times since, but since it is now out of warranty and so infrequent, I haven't taken it back. Sounds like yours is more frequent. It has been 4+ months since the last time it happened on mine. The main thing to do is get the dealer to document your complaint while it is still in warranty.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

It may be the Bendix or starter drive gear. I have had them go bad and start to slip. It will sound like the gears are grinding and not engaging. I have also had teeth on the flywheel break off. It will “grind” once or twice and then catch and everything will be “normal” for a while until it hits the bad spot again.

What did you replace? Starter? How did they come to the conclusion that it was the starter? Supposly they said everything check out on mine. Like I said before it's one of those things that you need to have the dealership see/hear.

Had the starter replaced. Did it once and that was enough for the tech.
