I am looking for the same answer. I have a 1993 GMC 3500, and the same thing happened to me 2 days ago.

Have you tried to drive it since the issue happened? I tried to drive the truck yesterday, shifted it into 4lo, and into 2hi, and still would not move. Anyone out there have any ideas?????

It drives fine in 2 wheel drive.

When you are in 4wd be in 4hi or low if the front tires are not able to slip it will bind. This is totally normal.

If you are on say ice in 4wd and try to turn the ice lets the tires slip and it doesnt bind up to the same degree. Also keep in mind the more of an angle you put the CV shafts in with torque applied to them the harder it is on them, Say for instance cranked to lock to the right and you mash the throttle, That would put A LOT of strain on that cv joint and may cause it to break.

I just jacked the truck up, and first off went to rotate the RF tire, and the tire not only rotated normally, but also turned to the right when I grabbed the wheel. The right outter tie rod end had failed, while trying to drive forward would steer right, while the left would stay stright, causing the tire to grab. Hence my binding issue......

I do have the same feeling though on dry pavement in 4WD, and if feels like the drivetrain is locking up, it does not do it all of the time though. Most times then not it happens when I am backing up in 4WD.

If i am ever on dry pavement i take it out of 4x4. My old truck used to pop the axle out of place if i ever ran on dry pavement and what a pain to put back together. They are not designed to be in 4x4 on dry ground that will not "slip" one of the tires.

rennat is right, there is no differential between the front and rear driveline (some vehicles do) So when you turn the front tires arc differently than the rear (travel different distances) and you will get that binding.. Totally normal.
